Province Takes Aim at Stubble Fires

Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie said the province extended the requirement for farmers to get permits before burning stubble on their fields to Dec. 4. The requirement to get a permit had ended Nov. 15. Under the permit program, permission from the province is needed for daytime stubble burning. Authorizations are issued for certain hours and in certain areas of the province based on weather, moisture and favourable wind or smoke dispersion conditions. Night burning is banned year-round.
