If everything were to burn, I'd be rid of it. I never did like ownership. But, with a 45-year art career, what do you do with all that stored art? I'd prefer to sell it. But that's not the reality. A plastic model of an early CPR construction locomotive, which I rebuilt in 1984-85 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the railway. In fact, the locomotive is CPR # 2, the Joseph Whitehead, which did construction work right here in Winnipeg in the 1870s. When I built it, I had no idea I'd chos...

4444Unless you've been living under a Whopper, you've probably seen the Burger King commercial where a cluster of beautiful, young women fawn over a man's diminutive cheeseburgers. ("Lookit those tiny little burgers..." "Adorable..." "I just want to squeeze them...") "They're not our top-selling 'app' but they're certainly in the top three," says Darren Lexa of Joeys Grill and Lounge at Polo Park. "We've been serving them for just over a year -- they're a great little sharing dish and a fun t...
Debutante Parties It Up by Hosting Feast for Less Fortunate
"Some people were very surprised," said Nita Miranda. "This is the first time they've heard of (such a debut)." She said she's glad they can share some of their good fortune with the less fortunate and even more pleased that her daughter thought to do it. "Normally, the family spends thousands of dollars for a debut party at the hotel," said [Rod Cantiveros]. On top of the lavish food, the tradition calls for 18 roses and 18 candles. Usually there's a prayer before the meal, and the debutante...

"I came back to graduate," said [Jessica Bondar], her voice faint. Bondar's mother, Charlotte Roy, said she was "really grateful, and so overwhelmed" to see her daughter graduate. "We never thought that she'd be here," she said. "They gave her 72 hours to live," said Bondar's aunt, Sheryl Matheson, fighting back tears as she recalled the diagnosis. "She's here at her graduation, and they all said she couldn't do it."
H1n1 Claims Fourth Victim Flu's Repercussions Shocking
"Women who have been confirmed with H1N1 have lost their babies because they are sick," said [Perry Gray]. "It's an odd flu and it's... out of sync with every flu season." "At any one time in Manitoba, there are 10,000 pregnant women," [Joel Kettner] said. "Does this represent a higher rate of significance? We don't have evidence that that's the case." Outside the hospitals, however, "we all share the same risk," [Brian Postl] said. "It's almost impossible to contain."
Strathcona Students' Talent Displayed in Book of Artwork
"We've been trying to make the school an arts-based school," principal Anastasia Sych-Yereniuk said Friday. "We have 112 pages," with one to four pieces of art on each page of ArtClass, Sych-Yereniuk said. "That is a very small percentage of what we have digitized. We probably have 5,000 digitized."
Shocked Fans, Stars Mourn Pop King
"He was absolutely fine," said [Mark Lester]. "I can't believe this, it's such a shock. I'll always remember him as being a very sweet, kind and loving man." "It was the most amazing experience I've had in the studio," [Lenny Kravitz] said. "He was funny. Very funny and we laughed the whole time. I also saw what a beautiful father he was. He was a beautiful human being. If not for him, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing. He gave me joy as a child and showed me the way to go." In Romania, wher...

[Karl Thordarson], 32, has grown a beard for the assignment. He gets to wear a lavish 17th-century costume with a plumed hat. A small stage has been erected in the planetarium chamber, with a set that includes a desk where [Galileo Galilei] writes with a quill pen, and a replica wooden telescope modelled on his "optik tube" of 1609. "Galileo's story is an amazing story of scientific discovery, but also of personal discovery," says [Scott Young]. "He was the first person to see the craters on ...

Wheelchair-Friendly Room a Must, Rights Commission Orders Hotel
"I'm happy about this decision," [Arlene Ursel] said on Friday. In May, the owner told the Free Press it was a misunderstanding by a former hotel front desk employee because they do have a "handicapped room," but it was occupied every time Ursel tried to book it. "This instance in Neepawa was just so extreme. It was the first person in six years that I've been using a wheelchair that turned me away."
No Sudden Jump in Local Parking Rates: Impark
"That is inconsistent with what we see," he said. "In fact, generally speaking, we saw rates fairly flat across the country." "There were a couple of isolated cases in lots close to the MTS Centre that had been undervalued that increased by about 50 per cent," he said. "But across the board the increase was more like 10 to 15 per cent."
11Pickton, through his lawyer, said Friday he would be appealing the decision to the Supreme Court. The main protest of the defence is that the trial judge's instructions to the jury -- that they could find the accused guilty of murder even if he personally did not slay the women -- dramatically altered the case put forth by the Crown, that Pickton acted alone. A dissenting judge agreed, but the majority found the judge's clarification on the law was adequate.

In 2007, the city agreed to sell Crystal land at the northeast corner of Assiniboine Avenue and Fort Street so the developer could build an apartment tower. But [Rubin Spletzer] walked away from the plan in 2008 to allow volunteer group the Friends of Upper Fort Garry more time to raise the $10 million they needed to build a heritage park on almost all the land on and around the site of Winnipeg's birthplace. "We don't know what interest rates and finances will be. We're putting our faith in ...
Police Hope to Curb Crime by Getting Public Online
Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said the department is encouraging all Winnipeggers to sign up for its new Winnipeg E-Watch, an email service designed to help people keep track of property crimes in their area or other parts of the city. He said notices will be sent out biweekly. "We want to get as much information out as possible because really policing is about information." "We want to use this as a tool to get information out to the public."
