Evans profiles Rosemary Travale, a Hamilton, Ontario-based artist, participating in this year's upcoming Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Travale has a style that combines quirk, cuteness and color to create characters that she describes as "weirdos .. with the best personalities." Her influences come from 1950s-era children's books, as well as the work of other comic artists.
Publishing Gets Mobile with Microcosm's Zine Trike
In a digital world, when print feels like it's going the way of the dinosaur, Microcosm Publishing decided to get crafty -- and mobile. Inspired by the desire to reduce set up time at events, founder Joe Biel purchased a tricycle frame from a friend and built a mobile display case to house Microcosm's catalogue of zines. The invention of the Zine Trike cut set-up time by half - not to mention that the uniqueness of the display case is a conversation starter.
In Toronto, several brave new writing workshops are offered by bookstores and publishers. These workshops will help talented, aspiring, and established writers.
Black Bile Is Anything but Precious
Matthew Firth's Black Bile Press and its chapbook series puts together stories by past contributors of Firth's other editorial project: the longstanding and positively heroic litmag, Front&Centre. Firth's approach to design craft, something which is often so important to micro press publishers, is to create chapbooks that are simple, clean, error-free, and that have a unique feel--something that sucks the reader in right off the bat.
