Are you a heroic or post-heroic manager? (participatory management)

Heroic management is no longer applicable in today's workplace. Effective leaders are those post-heroic leaders who take into account the employees' potentials and allow them to take part in the decision-making process. Most managers are afraid to pass some of their responsibilities to other team members because they think that the tasks may not be done properly. However, given the opportunity, teams can accomplish an excellent job.

Building Wealth in the '90s.

Fraud profiling.

Internal controls and security systems may lessen the risk of fraud but the problem cannot be completely eliminated. However, fraud profiling can make detection of such illegal activity a lot easier. Developing a fraud profile necessitates a thorough knowledge of the security systems, the documentation and people who make up the organization. The profile must be reviewed and updated frequently so that it will remain reliable.

National president's message. (Editorial)

Effective leadership helps boost employees' self-esteem. Moreover, a good leader capitalizes on the employees' special abilities to strengthen the organizational structure and at the same time, helps employees overcome their weakness. Prioritizing workers' development over their own advancement, effective leaders do not develop the superiority complex. Delegation of authority is one skill that they always try to master.

New strategies for a tough job market.

The job market has become less accomodating to outplaced executives. Changes in the structure of most organizations have greatly reduced the chances of these jobseekers to regain their old positions. Furthermore, organizations no longer consider experience as the sole gauge in assessing the value of applicants. Thus, outplaced executives must first evaluate their potentials and the valuable contributions that they can provide to the organization they wish to become part of before they submit ...

PCs, LANs and electrical power (or, how to leash power before it gets to your computer). (personal computers; local area networks)

Failure to anticipate the electrical power problems that can destroy personal computers and local area networks can severely affect any business operation. Power problems can be caused by a host of factors and there are devices available to protect computers. Power protection equipment that contain metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) are more expensive than those which do not have MOVs. Back-up power for file servers, local area network equipment and other priority apparatus are available through st...

A marketing plan for the Canadian Institute of Management (CIM) was developed by six undergraduate students at the University College of Cape Breton (UCCB) in partial fulfillment of the requirements in their marketing management course. Through tedious research work, the group was able to come up with a plan that discussed the underlying problems associated with CIM and the possible solutions to these problems. The plan was presented to the local CIM board of directors and was eventually carr...

Tips for successfully collecting accounts receivable. (Moneycare)

Successful collection of accounts receivable is essential to the survival of a business especially during periods of economic crisis. Business owners who keep a pleasant disposition when the time for collection comes are better off than those who resent the task. However, keeping a positive attitude is not enough. They must also make sure that they collect payments promptly and that their invoices are accurate. Moreover, they should have an assigned collector. They must also communicate feque...

Value and its perception.

Companies which focus on value may well assume that first-time buyers will patronize their services again. During periods of economic recessions, perception and presentation of value become integral to the success of various businesses. Companies must be able to design their own value menu wherein a list of value-added items can be found. However, they must keep in mind that these items must also be commercially marketable.

Wireless world awaits. (wireless technology)

Wireless technology maybe the trend in the 21st century. Cellular telephones and wireless computer networks have become increasingly popular. The new technology may also enhance the usefulness of the electronic point of sale systems and automatic teller machines. However, security problems and the lack of appropriate radio frequencies have reduced the applicability and reliability of wireless equipment but innovations especially in wireless local area networks are unlikely to be hindered.
