C.I.M. undertakes co-operative strategic plan. (Canadian Institute of Management) (CIM News)

The consensus taken from the branches of the National Council of the Canadian Institute of Management (CIM) indicates that the CIM ought to develop new strategic plans. The National Board shall undertake this process through a cooperation of the branches and the National Board whereby a series of regional meetings across Canada will be held to discuss problems. The National Board will review the information gathered and assemble a strategic plan which would be presented to the National Counci...

Don't just do something, stand there! (implementing changes in the workplace)

Total quality management and flexible or participatory management seem to be the two major changes in management being introduced in the workplace. An organization should consider and analyze whether these two management approaches are appropriate and effective before implementing them into the professional field. The long term gain should be worth the short term pain. New ideas or changes should be well thought out before spending time, energy and money into them.

Employment Equity.

Expert network may increase competitiveness.

The recession of the 1990s was the stimulant which triggered the Western World to structurally change from the Industrial Age to the Information/Knowledge Age. The reaction by businesses was massive layoffs of experienced people and knowledged workers. Canada could adjust productively to the Information/Knowledge Age through a 'Rent-an-Expert' network composed of the retired workers and those who have been laid off. This should be put into action immediately and should be led by a consorium o...

Federally backed factorers now act as credit guarantors. (Moneycare)

Lenders do not extend credit as easily as they did before. Factorers are emerging as credit guarantors of receivables for a fee. The major advantage of factoring is that lenders tend to increase a creditor's line of credit. A creditor can also manage receivables risks. All receivables are guaranteed so that a creditor would not have problems obtaining lines of credit on foreign receivables. A creditor should seek information from trade associations on reputable factorers and involve the bank ...

Finesse in quality service - beyond 'a smile in every aisle.'

Employers should teach their employees what to do to provide quality service to customers that will make them happy and friendly. Good performance makes customers and the employees smile sincerely. Total quality service can be given by employees to customers by finishing paper work quickly, helping customers as soon as they arrive, answering the phone before the third ring and remembering the names of regular customers. Employees should also accept responsibility for poor quality of service o...

Growth through value and sales mix.

Business growth goal attainment can be achieved through the effective management of product and service mix. Both the customers and the employees have to agree on the value of the higher price per unit products and services which push sales mix improvement. Gross margin revenue growth through the buy low-sell high tactic should be attained since many competitors can easily imitate levels of cost of goods sold and pricing. The key is value, not customer satisfaction.

Integrated Advertising.

Managing disputes: a lesson from the morgue.

Business leaders should look for welcome disputes and seek them out. Disputes allow executives to show leadership by allowing them to show concern for the concerned parties and align personal agendas with the corporation. When disputes are found and discovered, they should be isolated from their emotional aspects by ventilating them and letting the parties list down its important elements. The intentions of the parties concerned should be fused and an action plan to correct the disputes built.

Marketing to Generation X.

Marketing to Generation X or the 18 - 25 year olds would require innovative ways of doing business. The change in marketing would come in three ways. Simplicity, efficiency and protecting what they have would be the Generation X's main interest instead of the disposable mentality. The second major change is that people are more likely to prefer staying home so that they will buy more from their home. The third change would be the growth of direct and database marketing techniques. Businesses ...

Networking; tying the information together. (Computing)

Sharing information and applications to make business easier and faster is the main objective of networking. Local area networks can access files, hard drives and applications stored in other computers. Reports and letters take a uniform look so that everyone in the network uses the same format. Huge amounts of information from CD ROMs are accessed. Companies should seek professional help in setting up a network system. A systems integrator to design the system should be brought in as well as...

Precision business analysis: a new breakthrough.

Information technologies are being utilized by organizations aggressively to address their business priorities such as profitability, cost reduction, customer satisfaction and market share. Massive parallel processing systems enable the gathering, integration and analysis of data from all aspects of the business. Advanced networking technologies enhance data communication instantly to users in the corporation to turn them into useful information. New technology is also providing access to det...

The termination interview: how to conduct it professionally and humanely.

Managers conducting termination interviews would benefit from observing some guidelines which contribute to professionally handling the termination meeting. The main objectives of a termination meeting are to protect the organization's legal and moral responsibility, ensure that employee gets the message and avoid a negative impact of the termination on the remaining employees. The steps in a termination meeting include preparation, managing reactions, delivering the message and providing a s...
