Plan B is what's known as an emergency contraceptive. It comes in the form of two pills, and its active ingredient, levonorgestrel, has been used in birth control pills for decades. Unlike the pill, however, Plan B is a last-chance option -- designed to be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex (or intercourse during which a "contraceptive accident" occurred) in order to prevent pregnancy. It's worth noting that Plan B is not an "abortion pill" (a name usually used in reference to RU486, a completely different medication) nor does it "kill babies" as some of its more misinformed critics insist.
