Parents and their adolescent children tend to disagree about children's responsibilities in the family, particularly when it comes to caring for parents and household chores. We explored whether this disagreement is similar in three ethnic groups or whether it depends on ethnic background and acculturation. More particularly we investigated: (a) how adolescents and parents perceive family obligations and to what extent their perceptions differ, (b) to what extent family obligations are shaped by ethnic background and acculturation experiences, and (c) to what extent intergenerational discrepancies in family obligations are linked to adolescents' well-being (i.e., self-esteem, life satisfaction, psychological problems, and behavioral problems). Seventy-four Surinamese, 115 Turkish, and 9...

Judicial alteration of the meaning of civil marriage from union of a man and woman to the union of any two persons raises a number of legal issues not raised by legislative redefinition; these are separation-of-powers issues centered in notions of the proper scope and role of judicial review, creation of standards to guide judicial application of broad and open-ended constitutional guarantees like equality, liberty, and dignity, judicial deference to the political branches, and the like. Here, Stewart examines whether the tasks of the judiciary in these areas are done well by citing appellate cases.

To explore the internal dynamics of intercultural marriage, we conducted in-depth interviews with 18 married couples, of whom one partner was bom in Israel and the other immigrated from the former Soviet Union. The interviews focused on the contentious issues of everyday life: selfidentity, language use, cultural consumption, relations with the families/friends, division of household labor, and childrearing. The findings point to a clear tendency for immigrants to make most adjustments to the norms and expectations of the Israeli spouses and their social networks. For most immigrant spouses, the selective acculturation they had hoped for at the outset in fact morphed into relentless assimilation. The Israelization was expressed in the exclusive use of Hebrew in these homes; preference o...

Demographic shifts among the aging population of the United States call for a re-examination of our understanding of the needs of these individuals especially when race, ethnicity, family composition, and country of origin are considered in the discourse. This paper examines some of the implications of the rapid increase in racial and ethnic diversity among the older population in the United States for delivering culturally competent care through community based service providers. As much of our population ages, families across cultures and classes will increasingly need to be involved with specialized service providers. An ecological approach to this issue posits that elders, their families, and communities are closely intertwined, and need to be examined in relationship to one another...

Many contemporary immigrants belong to transnational families-families that maintain significant contact with two or more countries. These families identify with multiple environments and deal with life-cycle changes over extensive geographical space. This paper has two major aims: 1) to better understand how today's immigrant families facilitate intergenerational relationships across significant distances; and 2) to learn more about the understudied population of recent immigrant professionals from Eastern Europe in the United States. To accomplish mese aims, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 24 immigrant mothers and fathers from Eastern European countries residing in the United States. Based on grounded theory methodology, we identified four themes: (1) The definitio...
