With the war in Afghanistan back in the news, it bears restating that our government is lying about this "mission." The big whopper is that we are fighting for democratic and humanitarian ideals on behalf of the Afghan people. We, the public, may take comfort in this delusion, but the truth on the ground is that we are battling one side in a civil war in which both sides behave the same. Our forces are killing and dying to repel a Pashtun (Taliban) insurgency so that the Taliban in Kabul can execute 23-year-old Sayad Parwez Kambaksh (Student sentenced to die, Jan. 23) for the heinous capital crime of using the Internet in a way that "humiliates Islam.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Three young Canadian soldiers killed Wednesday in southern Afghanistan had just about finished their tour and were preparing to head home when they became embroiled in a deadly ambush, military officials said Wednesday. Chad Horn, all members of 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry based at CFB Shilo, died in the insurgent attack on their armoured vehicle in the volatile Zhari district outside Kandahar city.

The reason we're in Afghanistan today is that's where the Taliban supported al-Qaida as they hatched up the September 11 attacks on the United States," said Bill Graham, a former Liberal foreign affairs and defence minister who played a key role in decisions to deploy Canadian troops.
"I don't have any trouble saying that we are in Afghanistan as part of our NATO partnership, and the United States is one of the leading members of NATO," he said.
"Unfortunately the George Bush administration and the terrible mistake in Iraq has clouded one's view of U.S. motives for what it does, and gives those critics of the Afghan campaign a chance to say we're there to do George Bush's war.

Canada's commitment in Afghanistan matters because it concerns global and Canadian security, Canada's international reputation, and the well-being of some of the world's most impoverished and vulnerable people. Our commitment is important because it has already involved the sacrifice of Canadian lives.
At the same time, I realize many Canadians are uneasy about Canada's mission in Afghanistan. They wonder what it's all for, whether success is achievable, and in the end, whether the results will justify the human and other costs. The most difficult decision a country can make is to send its young men and women into harm's way, particularly when the outcome may appear less than certain. I can assure Canadians that each of us on the panel wrestled with this question throughout our inquiry....

MARJAH, Afghanistan -- Bombs and booby-traps slowed the advance of thousands of U.S. Marines and Afghan soldiers moving through the Taliban-controlled town of Marjah -- NATO's most ambitious effort yet to break the militants' grip over their southern heartland.
NATO said Saturday it hoped to secure the area in days, set up a local government and rush in development aid in a first test of the new U.S. strategy for turning the tide of the eight-year war. The offensive is the largest since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. Three Canadian Chinook helicopters were helping ferry some 1,100 coalition troops to Nad Ali, under the watch of four Canadian Griffon escorts.

The Canadian Forces can't keep track of whom it's sending into combat in Afghanistan -- something the military's ombudsman said Wednesday is disappointing.
Most notably, and I must say disappointingly, Defence seems unable to identify, with accuracy and confidence, who was deployed, and for what period of time, during recent missions in Afghanistan," [Yves Cote] said.
Asked at a news conference to clarify which Afghanistan tours of duty the Forces can't provide personnel information on, Cote replied: "That would apply to all tours of Afghanistan.

Violence continues unabated in Afghanistan, despite the presence of thousands of extra U.S. and NATO troops and fresh pledges of financial aid to the struggling government under President Hamid Karzai.
The U.S. administration already has highlighted the Iraq-Afghan comparison to lobby its NATO allies to commit more forces to Afghanistan.
The bombings capped a bloody week. NATO and Afghan troops backed by warplanes on Wednesday attacked up to 400 Taliban militants who had seized the strategic Arghandab valley, within striking distance of Kandahar.

In Afghanistan, for now, the Americans are trying to make better use of the troops they have. Gen. David McKiernan, the NATO commander, is in the process of being "double-hatted" as commander of America's separate and more muscular "Operation Enduring Freedom.
Gen. [David Petraeus]'s thinking on counter-insurgency is distilled in 25 pithy maxims, the latest version of which was issued in July. It tells subordinates that "the Iraqi people are the decisive terrain" and that soldiers must live among them and patrol on foot: "You can't commute to this fight."
He has also let it be known that he sees promise in trying to woo "reconcilable" Afghan tribes, as he did with the "awakening" of Sunni tribes in Iraq.

Four years later, the air force still hasn't come up with a way to recognize the Predator's contributions in Afghanistan and Iraq. "There is no valor in flying a remotely piloted aircraft. I get it," said Col. Luther "Trey" Turner, a former fighter pilot who has flown Predators since 2003. "But there needs to be an award to recognize crews for combat missions.
Most mission statements are long, complicated and italicized," he said. "Mine was three words: "Kill (Expletive) Heads." His troops shortened it further to "KFH" and painted it on the cluster of trailers that served as their makeshift headquarters. They emblazoned KFH on their unit letterhead. Everyone in the unit carried a poker chip bearing the three letters.
The plan that [Eric Mathewson] produced for the air force envisions ...
