The University of Manitoba's new National Centre for Livestock and the Environment (NCLE) kicked off a $9 million fundraising campaign yesterday at its location at the Glenlea Research Centre just south of the city.
Hytek Ltd., a Manitoba hog producers that is part of the Olywest consortium planning the Transcona plant, as well as other Manitoba hog producers like Puratone Corp., Maple Leaf Foods and a group of Hutterite colonies also made sizable donations.

Wind turbines are very compatible with agricultural practices, and this has led companies such as John Deere to actively assist farmers in developing wind as a way of diversifying their incomes. Although a wind farm can cover a wide area, the turbines themselves generally only occupy five per cent of the land area, leaving the remaining 95 per cent for conventional uses. Farmers routinely graze cattle or farm crops right up to the base of the turbines. While some have expressed concern over potential conflicts between wind turbines and crop dusters, experience has shown that it is possible for the two to operate side by side.
The energy production of a single wind turbine varies (naturally) with wind speed. Unfortunately, this has led some to believe that wind is an "intermittent" ener...

Incidence of flood has been on the increase in Ilorin for sometime; and this exemplifies the problem operating in most urban centres in Nigeria. Increase in runoff production in an urbanized catchment is a function, among other factors of to increase in percentage paved area brought about by deforestation activities and poor environmental attitude of the people. This study examines the relationship between runoff discharge and basin characteristics in Ilorin. Data used were collected directly from the field over a period of one calendar year. Rainfall data were collected in each basin using a standard rainguage of 20cm orifice while basin discharge was collected twice daily (8.00am and 6.30pm) using fabricated staff gauge graduated in centimeter. Basin morphometric attributes were compu...

The Glenlea plots, located at the University of Manitoba's Glenlea research centre south of Winnipeg, are Canada's oldest organic crop production field experiment. For the past 17 seasons, we have compared the performance of standard (conventional) practices with those using certified organic methods.
Here is one example of what we've learned at Glenlea. In the late 1990s, graduate student Shauna Mellish came to Manitoba to study ground beetles at Glenlea.
Farmers are always welcome at Glenlea. Many farmers come to Glenlea each year to kick the tires of the alternative agricultural systems under investigation. In 2008, our high school student assistants built a small shelter -- the clubhouse -- so that visitors have a place to rest and reflect after seeing the plots. We plan to outfit ...

This paper explores decision making processes in farm families with off farm working wives in post socialist Hungary based on an interview material with ten farm families. Decision making concerning issues of consumption and production is seen as a key arena for the articulation of gender relations within the farm family. Farm families with the husband being the head of the enterprise and the wife having an off farm wage labour constitute a specific case. Off farm incomes, in Hungary, played a crucial role in the capital accumulation phase of the farms. As previous research indicated, off farm incomes often constitute an integral part of the overall farm strategy. Off farm working wives contribute to the reproduction of the farm enterprise in diverse ways, such as through direct partici...

Recent studies of publication patterns in accounting history portray a myopic and introspective discipline. Analyses reveal the production and dissemination of accounting history knowledge which focus predominantly on Anglo-American settings and the age of modernity. Limited opportunities exist for contributions from scholars working in languages other than English. Many of the practitioners of accounting history are also shown to be substantially disconnected from the wider community of historians. It is argued in the current paper that interdisciplinary history has the potential to enhance theoretical and methodological creativity and greater inclusivity in the accounting history academy. A practical requirement for this venture is the identification of points of connectedness between...
