has joined the Manitoba Canola Growers Association as the provincial environmental plan co-ordinator. [Jewel Mazur] has her bachelor of science degree from the University of Manitoba and a master of natural resource management from the Natural Resources Institute. Mazur grew up on a farm north of Rossburn and helps her husband run a mixed farm northeast of Russell. The Provincial Environmental Plan is a voluntary, commodity-based version of an equivalent agri-environmental plan. MCGA is offering this option to producers as a complementary alternative to individual environmental farm plans. The PEP targets water quality as a single environmental priority common to all canola producers in Manitoba. MCGA is a member organization committed to maximizing net income from canola.

There's another rather interesting trait about careers in agriculture and food science compared to other occupations. Most people in agriculture don't view their activities as a job or a career as much as they consider it a lifestyle and a passion. As well, many professionals and farm families have historical roots and connections to the land because their grandparents may have homesteaded on the same piece of property. These links and connections alone are extremely valuable in creating a sense of pride in what one does for a living.

So there's a been a lot of excitement over new varieties of wheat that have built-in resistance in the form of a gene called Sm1. Varieties carrying this gene increase their production of a naturally occurring acid in the wheat kernel. The insects don't like the taste, so they stop eating and starve. The acid levels in the wheat return to normal by the time the wheat is mature.
That's precisely where it gets complicated and where the biggest extension push must focus. Most farmers don't buy wheat seed every year. Traditionally, up to 80 per cent of the wheat grown on the Prairies has been from seed farmers saved from the previous crop.
If they continue this practice with the midge wheat blend, the susceptible portion of the seed blend will diminish to the point of being ineffective in ...
