TWENTY YEARS AGO The AIDS virus may lie dormant longer than has been thought in children infected as newborns, implying a "large population" has yet to develop the disease, a study says. TEN YEARS AGO The cost of building a wastewater treatment plant for Maple Leaf has taken a $4.5-million jump.

Within the LIA's range of categories (low-budget spots, animation, humour, excellence in music, editing, direction, technical effects), we see all sorts of products and services, though you often don't know what these are at first. These days, good commercials force you to watch and guess right to the end.
There are public service announcements, from a tearjerker for Doctors Without Borders to some defiantly silly "AIDS vs. condoms" spots, in which a large, cheesy-looking AIDS virus faces off against a large condom for arcane contests like falcon calling and guacamole making. (I'm sure I don't need to tell you that the condom always wins.)

What goes on in Vegas... is on view for the world to see as five performers have their personal and professional limits tested as they prepare for the opening of Cirque du soleil's sexy circus Zumanity. While it's decidedly weird seeing high-minded Cirque founder Guy Laliberté demanding more "tits" in his critique of the first run-through, this is fleshy, funny, provocative stuff... and the whip expert is unbelievably cute, given her chosen career. But let's face it, Lovesick is also a slick infomercial. Still... it's better than Showgirls.
The one to watch in this program is director Sian Heder's potent drama, Mother. If they gave best actress Oscars to the stars of short films, former Winnipegger Angela Featherstone would qualify for her neurotic, boozy Beverly Hills matron, who leav...

Dear Confused: Here's the scoop on dating 101. Since you last waded waist deep in the pool of love, there have been a few changes since the Victorian age of formal courting in the presence of chaperones. Here are a few historic events that might affect: 1) your spontaneous desire to get naked with company (the discovery of the AIDS virus, 1981); 2) your sense of suffering quietly (President Bush announces he hates broccoli, 1989); and 3) your belief that marriage is forever (two royal divorces, 1996).

[Ron Horsefall] works with All Nations Hope AIDS Network, helping to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. As someone who has been living with the virus for 20 years, he said that, through his workshops, he tries to "bring a human face to HIV and AIDS and just show people that it's not a death sentence.
You know, it really hits home to a lot of people. They see me with HIV and AIDS and the work that I'm doing, getting out there in the community and working past that fear and denial. Being an Aboriginal person and saying 'Yes, I do have HIV and AIDS and yes, this is what happened to me in my life and yes, these are the choices I made and yes, this is what I'm doing for myself.' It's very empowering to people in their lives," he said.
"I am living with HIV and AIDS and I've had to do a lot of...

The pierced and tattooed Bakker grew up in Charlotte, N.C., at the heels of his parents' Praise The Lord ministry and television network. The PTL empire imploded in scandal in the 1980s. Afterward, [Tammy Faye Bakker], who divorced an imprisoned Jim Bakker and married Roe Messner, re-emerged as a television and cult personality -- this time embracing gay men infected with the AIDS virus. She died of cancer last year.
Bakker's activism on behalf of gays and lesbians started three years ago, after he saw friends mistreated because of their sexual orientation. He began to study the Bible and now says he's convinced that passages condemning homosexuality refer to worship of a fertility god or male prostitution but not the caring and respectful relationships established between people of the...

The new HIV program means Manitoba is finally admitting to having an HIV problem. In 1999, 791 Manitobans had tested positive for the AIDS virus; last year the number rose to almost 1,400. According to Manitoba Health, 2006 was the first year the number of new cases fell, in seven years. But those who work in community health believe the numbers do not reflect the reality of HIV in Manitoba. There has never been a good public education campaign to make people well aware of the risks for infection, such that those at Nine Circles Community Health Centre are "continually surprised at the lack of information people have on the basics of HIV," according to its executive director. Rates of some sexually transmitted infections in geographic pockets around Manitoba would imply higher infection...
