The first thing to address is the term "vapour retarder". This is commonly called vapour barrier or air-vapour barrier but it is not a true barrier, as it can let air and moisture through seams, small holes and gaps if not completely sealed. Whether we use the term retarder or barrier, the term air-vapour should be the prefix. The vapour is the moisture we are trying to stop, which is in the soil in the crawl space. This moisture may be released into the warm air above the soil as water vapour when we heat the crawl space. So, if we stop air movement between the soil and the crawl space, we will stop the moisture intrusion. Thus, we should have an air-vapour barrier in place over the dirt floor.
Insulation in our homes is designed to prevent heat loss by slowing convection and conducti...

The simple fact that patio doors have large sliding sections makes them prone to air leakage. Most new doors and windows that are not sliders have large compression-style weatherstrips that seal well when the units are closed and locked. This prevents cold air from leaking in and warm from leaking out around the sash or the door slabs, in most cases. With sliding units the weatherstrips tend to be brush-style ones that seal the air space around the doors somewhat, while allowing good movement of the door. The problem with this style of weatherstripping is that it is comprised of thousands of small, individual fibres, which may allow air to pass through the many openings between the fibres. This is unlike the aforementioned plastic or neoprene compression weatherstrips, which become an i...

Latin America's recent bout of prosperity has been driven by record-high commodity prices and inflows of foreign investment, both of which are now under threat as the US financial crisis threatens to engulf the world - scaring investors and driving down the price of commodities, beginning with oil. [...] even though the United States may not presently have a very clear Latin America policy, it remains the most influential external player in the region: its military effectively oversees the region's air and sea space; its multinationals are present in most countries; free trade agreements are being offered throughout the hemisphere; millions are being invested in Colombia's security; and significant efforts are being made to counter the influence of Hugo Chavez.

In his speech Sunday at Bar-Ilan University, [Benjamin Netanyahu] practically "divorced" himself from Likud's historical ideology of "Greater Israel.
Netanyahu knows, of course, that his stiff conditions for Palestinian statehood are very difficult for the Arabs to swallow. They are: Arab recognition of Israel as a "Jewish nation-state"; no "right of return" for Palestinian refugees; no Palestinian control of air space and water resources in the West Bank; full demilitarization of the West Bank with no right for the Palestinian Authority to sign treaties with entities hostile to Israel, such as Iran.
Following Netanyahu's positive response to the Obama Doctrine, all now expect a public Palestinian response to [Barack Obama]'s Cairo speech. Will [Mahmoud Abbas] rise to the challenge? Or...

The booth was almost always busy yesterday, as producers - sometimes lined up all the way around the counters - spent time rifling through old aerial shots, looking for the farms they remember from their youth. At the time the older images were taken, restrictions on air space were quite different than they are today, and many of the pictures were taken low to the ground and provide a great deal of farmyard detail, sometimes including clear pictures of people on the ground.

The reason for removal of the insulation is to prevent trapping warm, moist air that may accumulate in this small cavity between the roof sheathing and the drywall below. This warm air may leak out from the house roof system or develop once warm vehicles are parked in the enclosed space. This warm air will rise and leak through openings in the ceiling drywall and accumulate in the fibreglass insulation under the roof sheathing. Because there is little air or vapour impedance installed or allowance for removal of this warm air by passive ventilation, it will remain in the insulation until it cools. This cooling will likely cause condensation within this small cavity, often on the underside of the roof deck. In very cold weather, this condensation will freeze and heavy frost accumulations...

The most severe blow to Israel came from Turkey. Since the Iraqi coup d'etat in July 1958, Israel and Turkey have had excellent political, military and economic relations. Israel overhauled Turkish war planes and tanks. Turkey bought arms and sophisticated military technologies from Israel and allowed the Israeli air force to train in Turkish air space. Tens of thousands of Israeli tourists flooded the Turkish beaches and resorts.
While Hamas-Gaza leadership was holed in its bunkers -- Hamas-Damascus accompanied Syrian President Assad to Doha and conducted preliminary discussions with [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad] about the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. It was obvious that Hamas leader Khaled Mash'al was out of touch with the realities in the Gaza Strip.
Indeed, in his first appearance afte...

If there is not a visible gap at the exterior of the window, then the interior of the window is the next location to attempt a repair. If the window is well sealed at the exterior wall, then the offending air space is likely between the new window frame and old wall studs. Access to this area can be easily obtained by prying off the window casing at the side and possibly the top of the window. If the casing is painted or caulked to the wall, a utility knife should be used to cut this joint to prevent damage to the wall or the casing, prior to pulling it off the window frame. Once the casing is removed, the gap around the window may be visible, or may be covered by the interior drywall sheathing. If no space is visible, your utility knife can be used to cut away the edge of the interior ...

Fresh air intakes, for the provision of combustion air for heating appliances, are not necessary for electric furnaces. These are normally installed near an older natural-gas furnace or hot-water heater to ensure adequate air for combustion. These intakes are usually composed of long, insulated, flexible ducting installed with a loop near the bottom. This loop is designed to provide a partial trap, reducing the amount of cold air intrusion until it is needed by the heating devices.
Regardless of the lack of necessity for combustion air for homes heated with electric furnaces, bringing in a good source of fresh air may be equally or more important than for homes heated with gas. Homes with older, naturally aspirated furnaces and water heaters have large chimney flues or vents installed t...

Women talk about feelings and relationships, use more adjectives and colour, and talk less about facts than men do, she says. "The kind of things women talk about, men don't want to listen to." Like the dentist's drill, talk about relationships seems to go on and on for male listeners.
Women talking to women talk a lot more," she said. But in a mixed setting, "women self-censor while men interrupt a lot. In a mixed setting, men see conversation as a competition. They will interrupt, they will talk over (others) and get air space, because if you get more air space, you're a winner. The research shows men do 98 per cent of interruptions. Women will give up and men will persist. In a mixed setting women tend to be quieter.
"Then they'll go around and talk to their (female) friends and the...
