[Tony Tyler], who's flying to Hong Kong on Cathay's first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, loves the jetliner. He loves its range, its two huge General Electric engines and its fuel efficiency. The delivery of Cathay's first 777-300ER last month also marked the airline's expansion into its passengers' unconscious. For Cathay is betting its future as a long-haul carrier on an ability to deliver a good night's sleep. Cathay's first 777-300ER -- made just over the line at Boeing's plant in Everett, Wash. -- is its fourth aircraft fitted with all three classes of redesigned seating. All of the airline's current fleet of 67 long-haul aircraft will feature the new cabins by 2009.
has been awarded the Manitoba Hydro contract to provide air service to the Kelsey Generating Station, 680 kilometres by air north of Winnipeg. The service will transport Manitoba Hydro employees and contractors to the site over the coming year as they overhaul the seven generating units located there. This transportation contract comes just weeks after the commencement of construction of an additional 18,000-square-foot hangar at the Fast Air Terminal. The new hangar, scheduled for completion in early 2007, will allow Fast Air to house its fleet of owned and managed aircraft in one location at the terminal. "Our commitment to excellence in aircraft maintenance and flight services has earned us the reputation of being a safe and reliable airline" said Fast Air's President Dylan Fast. Fas...

'I think WestJet is still putting pressure on them by keeping pricing down and battling for market share by going into markets where Air Canada was dominant before' -- analyst Raymond Neidl on Air Canada The shift to new cost-efficient aircraft will induce Air Canada's (TSX:AC.B) financial results to soar in the coming months, the country's largest airline said Friday. While our fleet-renewal program is initially adding considerable expense for training and additional maintenance costs for aircraft exiting our fleet, we anticipate additional sublease revenue in the second half that will partially offset this cost," [Montie Brewer] told analysts.

Until now, contracted airlift -- complemented by a fleet of five CC-150 Polaris (Airbus A310) aircraft which are used for moving personnel and palletized cargo -- has been used to meet Canada's strategic airlift needs. Fortunately, the government has announced plans to acquire 17 J-model Hercules aircraft to replace the oldest of our current Hercules. The C-130J Hercules is an updated variant that will provide Canada with the most advanced multi-role transport capabilities available. While this aircraft looks much the same as our current model, the cockpit, engines and cargo compartment have modern, state-of-the-art systems. In short, this is a more capable performer, with greater speed, range and reliability than the aircraft it replaces. The government of Canada's decision to acquire ...
WestJet's strategy, meanwhile, is to use a new fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft -- which require less maintenance and burn less fuel -- to fly into U.S. sun spot destinations and redeploy planes in the off-season summer months into Canadian markets. The feeling was the market would be 'destimulated,' that people wouldn't travel because prices are higher," chief executive Clive Beddoe told reporters Wednesday after the company released second-quarter results. "(But) the market appears very strong. If you look at traffic numbers today, we're getting ahead of where the traffic was before Sept. 11.
The foresight of the 102 FW Plans and Scheduling section and the aggressive action of the Aircraft Fuels Systems section averted a potentially catastrophic fuel system failure for the entire F-15 fleet of aircraft.
While the surplus was well below the more than $6 billion analysts had expected, BMO Nesbitt Burns economist Douglas Porter said the real surprise is that imports didn't surge sooner, given the strength in both the loonie and domestic spending. Imports, which rose rapidly last year as business investment boomed, slipped during the first two months of 2006," it said. "Importers resumed investment, with airlines' fleet expansion fuelling a jump in aircraft imports, and continued expansion in the natural resources sector driving up imports of industrial machinery. "The mighty loonie continues to slowly chip away at Canada's non-energy trade surplus, but the driver is as much rising imports as any hit to exports," Porter said.
SAS was forced to ground its entire fleet of Q400 aircraft -- 27 planes in all -- after a Bombardier-built plane crash-landed in Lithuania on Sept. 12 and another crash-landed in Denmark Sept. 9, in incidents blamed on corrosion to the landing gear.
