  • As a renowned dog expert, Mr. President, I have one question for you: What the (very bad word) are you thinking? Seriously, [Barack Obama]! I mean, sure, these are lovely dogs: they're both non-shedders and don't cause as much reaction in allergy sufferers as other dogs. But that is not the point. The point is, as leader of the free world, you need a dog with special qualities, a dog that can help lead the world out of chaos, a dog that can bring us back from the brink of the abyss, a dog that can herald a new age of hope and prosperity. Unswerving dedication -- These dogs will focus on you, especially if you happen to be holding a sandwich, with an unnerving laser-beam-like intensity, refusing even to blink for a second in case they are required to retrieve foodstuffs that have inad...

  • If you ordered today, you'd have a kitten in about 15 months," [Megan Young] told me recently. Although the company isn't sure exactly when the first cats will be ready -- "It's up to Mother Nature," Young said -- it expects to make deliveries in the first quarter of 2007 and to build up the breeding pool to several dozen by next summer. All Allerca cats will be delivered when they are 12 weeks old and will be spayed or neutered. They come with a year of veterinary insurance, nail caps called Soft Paws -- "We want to discourage declawing," Young said -- and a "certificate of authenticity" that bears an image of the divergent gene sequence. Young says Allerca's breeding facilities are "barrier-free" and staffed by experienced animal husbandry experts as well as "professional animal soci...

  • Veterinarians see many pets with allergies, especially dogs, and the symptoms our pets have are a little different from the symptoms most people have. Where people who are exposed to allergens in the air have mostly upper respiratory symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, etc.), most allergies in dogs cause dermatologic signs. Antihistamines are a main line of defence against allergies. Antimicrobials, nutritional supplements, shampoos, other topical soothing agents, and, in really severe cases, steroids are used to manage our pets' allergies. Avoidance is great, but when we're talking about things in the air that we breathe, avoidance can be difficult.

  • [Candy] would occasionally accompany [Linda McKay] to the store. Like other cats, she wasn't thrilled by riding in the car. Leaving her at home wasn't the best option either, because Candy loved the attention she'd receive at work. One night, McKay left her at the store overnight by accident. To McKay's relief, she fared well. In fact, Candy enjoyed her new abode so much, and despised the car with such fervor, McKay allowed her to become an official store resident. One customer, Gail Lamoureux, has visited Candy for years. Walking into the store, she immediately looks to see "Candy on her stool." Lamoureux admits "I get frantic when I don't see her." It's obvious this customer has become attached to Candy. She often takes her daughter along on her weekly store visits. Lamoureux will spe...

  • Dear TOR: I'm sure you wouldn't want to subject your dad to daily doses of snorting, sneezing and wheezing even if you do fancy a furry feline friend. A pet is, of course, a family member, so all the present relatives should be factored in before any additions occur.¬ There are no non-allergenic cats. The hairless breed, which is rather unattractive and always looks cold, is less allergenic.
