Veterinarians see many pets with allergies, especially dogs, and the symptoms our pets have are a little different from the symptoms most people have. Where people who are exposed to allergens in the air have mostly upper respiratory symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, etc.), most allergies in dogs cause dermatologic signs. Antihistamines are a main line of defence against allergies. Antimicrobials, nutritional supplements, shampoos, other topical soothing agents, and, in really severe cases, steroids are used to manage our pets' allergies. Dear TOR: I'm sure you wouldn't want to subject your dad to daily doses of snorting, sneezing and wheezing even if you do fancy a furry feline friend. A pet is, of course, a family member, so all the present relatives should be factored in before any additions occur.¬ There are no non-allergenic cats. The hairless breed, which is rather unattractive and always looks cold, is less allergenic.
