Lexus claims that the 2010 HS 250h brings attainable, sustainable luxury to Canadian consumers. My extended test drive revealed a truly unique luxury car that maximizes fuel economy with an estimated fuel-consumption rating of just 5.7 litres per 100km in combined city/highway driving. Lexus also managed to shrink its impact on the planet by using ecologically advanced materials that include plastic parts made from plant-based materials.
The top-of-the-line Ultra Premium model, at $48,750, includes heated and ventilated seats covered in premium leather that are equipped with the Lexus driver-seat memory system, a voice-activated navigation system with integrated back-up camera, a concert hall-quality 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, LED headlamps with the Lexus auto levelling syst...

Both Altimas had Nissan's refined continuously variable transmission (CVT). While Toyota, which supplies the hybrid's electric powertrain, is acknowledged as a leader in hybrid technology, Nissan has developed its CVT system to performance levels unattained by other manufacturers. This CVT has built-in shift points that make it feel like a typical automatic transmission. It also manages to eliminate the high revs demanded by other CVTs.
While the standard 2.5 sedan with its CVT produced decent acceleration and response from its four-cylinder engine, adding the electric motor to the powertrain system resulted in perky performance. The hybrid system boosts the overall horsepower to 198 from 175, a change that adds to the Altima's already sporty DNA. With the electric motor kicking in its ...

So it was with initial disappointment that Volvo's introduction of its R-Design package for the 2009 model year seemed to offer only sizzle, no steak. The new package ($4,200 for the T5) replaces the 2008 model-year's Sport and Sport Styling packages and blings up the C30 T5 tester (base price $32,195) with all sorts of extroverted styling cues -- 18-inch alloy wheels, dual xenon headlights, a skirt kit, rear spoiler and chrome mirror caps.
The one thing Volvo offers that VW doesn't is the optional ($750), camera-based Blind Spot Information System (BLIS). When activated via a console-mounted button, cameras mounted beneath the side-view mirrors continuously monitor the area around the C30's back bumper. When a vehicle occupies the appropriate position, a light on the windshield pillar ...

Jim Morrison, DaimlerChrysler Canada's senior manager of product strategy, says the Jeep diesel's fuel efficiency can add up to hundreds of dollars in fuel savings compared with the competition's gas-powered SUVs. For example, based on 20,000 km of driving a year, the CRD will save its owner $694 in fuel costs compared with a Nissan Pathfinder 4.0L V6.
During a brief opportunity to drive a Grand Cherokee CRD, the sport-ute's performance proved impressive. The engine's healthy torque created strong acceleration from a stop as well as in merging and passing manoeuvres on the highway. Engine noise was minimal -- even at idle there was barely a hint of the clatter usually associated with a typical diesel engine. And there was no diesel smell, either at idle or while trailing a CRD on the ro...

Beneath the Sport's hood is a 2.5-litre engine that employs Subaru's i-Active valvetrain. The latter improves things by altering the lift of the secondary intake valve according to the demands placed on the engine. This and a revised intake manifold, which improves low- and mid-range performance, combine to produce 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 r.p.m. Generally, this is enough power to satisfy, as the engine is quick to rev to 3,000 r.p.m., which is where it begins to produce its best work. When teamed with the four-speed automatic -- which comes with economy, sport and manual modes-- the Impreza is fast enough to be fun.
This leads to the Impreza's most likable trait -- the refinement of its all-wheel-drive system. The flat-four boxer engine brings a low centre o...

The caveat is Audi's insistence that the [Avant] is a mid-sized wagon. Not a chance! The Avant's interior accommodations are ideally suited toward parental units with pre-pubescent kids. Anything outside that norm can make things on the snug side. As an example, the wagon's front seats are more than comfortable for my 6-foot-2 frame. However, that means my 5-foot-7 daughter sitting behind me has her knees firmly embedded in my seat back -- even though the back is scooped out to provide a little extra space. OK for me, not so much for her. Judge accordingly. By the way, cargo capacity with the rear seats up is a highly usable 27.8 cubic feet.
Though most A4 buyers will gravitate to the car's available six-speed manumatic, the six-speed manual as found in the tester is a worthy considerat...

The 4.0 litre six cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed manual transmission, pumps out a respectable 239 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Despite its 1,945 kilogram curb weight, the FJ has more than enough grunt to tackle tough terrain. It features true four-wheel drive with a high-low range shifter and a differential lock. My tester was also equipped with Toyota' s off-road package that included 16-inch aluminium alloy wheels wrapped in beefy BFGoodrich Rugged Trail P265/75R16 tires and trail-tuned Bilstein shock absorbers that softened out some serious bumps. The FJ Cruiser uses a high-mounted, double wishbone front suspension and stabilizer bar, and a 4-link rear suspension with a lateral rod with coil springs and a stabilizer bar. This set-up allows this rig to truly bring ...

Both cost and need are tempered by "What we want". I may want all the bells and whistles, such as in-car entertainment systems, heated leather seating or a powerful engine, but do I really need them or simply want them? Although the reliability of most of these "luxury" items i s excellent, they do cost more to fix if repairs are needed. Items such as air conditioning, power windows, alloy wheels and automatic transmission add to the purchase price but also make the vehicle sell quicker and worth more later on. They are worth the price. Other features such as navigation systems are costly options and have a limited appeal. If you really want it and can afford it, why not, but don't confuse "want" and "need" when shopping. You will make a much wiser choice if you have identified these ac...

So why is it, you might ask, that the "dawn" [Henry Ford] inspired has become "high noon" for the Big Three?
Rainbow doesn't begin to describe the colours, accents, tints and frosts available. Cornucopia doesn't begin to describe the array of "options," from amped-up sound and video systems, to global positioning systems, lights that sense darkness, wipers that sense rain, tires for rain, tires for snow, hub caps, alloy wheels, heated seats, air conditioning, adjustable pedals, all-wheel drive, tuned suspensions, three- four- five- six- and eight-speed transmissions. Ditto for engine cylinders.
You might note that the comparisons above were all GM vehicles. The same comparisons can be made with other carmakers, but GM is deepest in the glue and, perhaps not surprisingly, the furthest fr...

In fairness, it should be noted I climbed into the GTI after spending a week driving Mitsubishi's new Lancer Evo road rocket. Like the GTI, the Evo has a 2.0-litre four-banger pumped up by a turbocharger and intercooler, and its performance is electrifying. So, there were some expectations for Volkswagen's hot rod to fulfil.
That refinement extends beyond the engine bay. The GTI's slightly lowered stance suggests it is more than a grocery getter -- the optional 18-inch alloy wheels and low-profile performance tires on the tester added to the intrigue. So, too, did the bright red brake calipers peeking out from behind the wheel spokes, but there's little else to give away the GTI's secret.
The GTI has an edge over the Evo when you look at the bottom line. Thanks to recent price reduction...
