[Cindy M. Meston] and [David M. Buss] also face some very ugly realities, examining women's experiences of being deceived, coerced or forced into sex, along with the vaguely depressing area of "unwanted consensual sex." (Says one weary-sounding woman: "I once had sex with a guy mostly to shut him up. I figured if I just gave in, we'd have sex for 10 minutes and then I'd get to sleep.")
One woman admits she dated a handyman because her house needed work. Others find sex to be a fair trade for a Louis Vuitton bag or "a nice meal." Many women point to the ebb and flow of desire in a long relationship and admit to occasionally having dutiful sex to please their partners. "I usually just lie there and make lists in my head," says one.
Sex sometimes serves other needs. There's caretaking sex...

Since Barbaro's injury early in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, the reaction of strangers to his plight -- an outpouring of concern and love -- raises a question with no easy answer: Why do people care so much about the fate of an animal to which they have no personal connection?
The image of jockey Edgar Prado leaning into Barbaro's shoulder to help him stay upright was reminiscent of the photograph from 1975 showing Jacinto Vasquez leaning against his injured filly, Ruffian, and miraculously keeping her from going down on the track.
Ruffian was in the lead when she broke down in her famous match race against the Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure on July 6, 1975, at Belmont Park. She was so competitive that she kept running even though Vasquez, one of the strongest riders around...

This paper reviews the current work on mouse genetics, brain, and behaviour in my laboratory. It starts with an historical account of our research and shows how certain research themes, such as olfaction, learning, social behaviour, and environmental effects in rodents have led to our current research on behavioural phenotyping of inbred, mutant, knockout, and transgenic mice. We are concerned with finding neural and behavioural sequelae to genetic manipulations in mice and use a battery of tests to detect behaviours that are altered in genetically modified mice. In this way we are working to dissociate neural and behavioural effects of different gene manipulations in mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases. Sensory, motor, cognitive, affective, and social behaviours may all be affec...
