This past spring, the federal government released: Moving Forward on Climate Change: A Plan for Honouring our Kyoto Commitment. A key objective is to help communities, companies and individuals reduce transportation emissions by using cleaner fuels, such as biofuels. Ethanol and biodiesel are biofuels, meaning they are made from renewable biological products. Most ethanol is made from corn or sugar, but Ottawa-based Iogen Corp. has become a world leader in developing cellulose ethanol made from waste straw. Biodiesel is made from animal fats and virgin and recycled vegetable oils derived from soybeans, canola, corn, and sunflowers, as well as tall oil, produced from wood pulp waste. Agriculture Canada concludes that ethanol contains about twice the energy used to produce it.
So, what is biodiesel, exactly? In a nutshell, it's a natural and renewable fuel alternative for diesel engines and is made by converting oils and fats into chemicals in a chemical process called transesterification. Catalysts such as methanol or ethanol are also used. Different fats and vegetable oils produce somewhat different biodiesel fuels, but they all do essentially the same thing. Biodiesel can be used in any type of diesel engine, and contains no petroleum. It's also nontoxic and biodegradable. Theoretically, any kind of biomass can be used to refine it, but mostly it's made from vegetable oils such as canola, soybean, or corn.
