I find it amazing that when I first moved to Winnipeg as a teenager in 1977, [Debby] was the polar bear I saw at the zoo, and my children grew up seeing Debby! They are now 21, 19 and 12. This speaks volumes on the care and love she received from the zookeepers. She was a polar bear with a sense of humour -- totally awesome! To Debby: May your spirit run free on the tundra.
As a former zookeeper who has cared for Debby, I am saddened by the loss of this wonderful animal. Debby was a true icon for the zoo, and will be a great loss for the city. She is proof that zoos are immensely valuable to provide us with a living connection to animals of the world. Debby and the polar bear exhibit have drawn millions of visitors to the zoo and to the city and provided immeasurable learning about her ...
