  • The ships, which date from between the 1st century B.C. and the 4th century, carried amphorae -- vases used for holding wine, olive oil and other products -- as well as kitchen tools and metal and glass objects that have yet to be identified, Italy's Culture Ministry said. The spot was highly trafficked, and hit by frequent storms and dangerous sea currents. Discoveries of shipwrecks are not unusual in the Mediterranean, but these ships are far better preserved than most, which are often found scattered in fragments, said Annalisa Zarattini, the head of the ministry's office for underwater archaeology. Because the ships sank at a deeper lever than most known wrecks, they were not exposed to destructive underwater currents, she said.

  • Drawing upon existing literature, this paper briefly discusses aspects of conspicuous consumption. Analysis of the construct has been done in the perspective of changing capitalist structure and dominating socio-philosophical ideologies, especially postmodernism. Effort has been made to extend the original concept and propose necessary refinement and integration of relevant concepts to enable a meaningful, holistic, and contemporary interpretation of the said construct. This paper examines different aspects of consumer behavior, helps to generate some important directions for future research in the field, and also discusses these issues in the context of the transitional socio-economic background of India.

  • Following a hugely successful inaugural event, organizers of the International Metisfest are expecting it to be bigger and better this year. About 7,000 people, from both Canada and the United States, took part in the 2009 Metisfest. "We're going to double that and there's a possibility of tripling it," says Dan Goodon, one of the organizers for the 2010 Métisfest, which will be staged Aug. 26-29. As was the case for the inaugural event, this year's Métisfest will be held at the International Peace Garden, which is situated on the Canada/United States border between Manitoba and North Dakota. The purpose of Métisfest is rather simple - to bring Métis people together to revel in their cultural and historical ties while enjoying plenty of entertainment such as fiddling, jigging and dancin...

  • We are adding by bits and pieces to the history of the people of the area. And caves have been created in the rock to expose quartz. It's unbelievable," [Kevin Brownlee] said. Another trip has been planned already for December when more recording of Elders will occur, and communities from nearby Leaf Rapids, Lynn Lake and Pukatawagan will be involved because their ancestors all shared the area. "I could spend the rest of my career in this part of the province, because the early people's movements were not restricted to the waterways. They travelled through the boreal forest as well," Brownlee added. "Here I am looking after the ancient heritage of the people of Manitoba, so I work with Assiniboine, Ojibway, Dene, Dakota, Inuit and Cree from all across the province, so it connects me wi...
