  • Argentina is one of the world's few producers of Torrontes; it's the only country that gives this grape a fair shake. This light white has intense spice and floral aromas with a lovely tangerine component It's medium-bodied, crisp, with medium acidity -- tart orange, floral and green melon flavours come through on the palate. Try with soft white cheeses. Having said that, value-priced wines are rarely cellar-worthy -- you'll rarely try a bottle of $10-$12 wine and think to, "Hey, I should have put that in the cellar for a few years." These wines are meant to be drunk young, typically within the first six months of hitting the shelves. Go ahead and invest in a half-dozen or so if you want to have a "house wine" on hand for when company comes calling. That will keep you from pilfering pr...

  • Enter Argentina -- well, it was there all along, wasn't it? It's just that now, Argentine wines are starting to occupy more and more shelf spots, and often at prices that compete with (or trump) neighbouring Chile's. Their wines (especially their big Malbecs) shine with a depth and complexity that often outshines Aussie or Chilean wines of the same price. This is one of the reasons Malbec does so well in Argentina: the country's flagship red grape produces dark, heavy wines that thrive in hot, dry conditions. Wines made from the Malbec grape aren't always up everyone's alley -- these reds pack a lot more punch than most others at comparable prices. Malbec can get a little wild -- big alcohol or dark, concentrated fruit -- so pairing it up with big meats and grilled food is often a good ...

  • Last month, 10,000 people took to the streets in Jakarta to protest skyrocketing soybean prices. And Indonesians were not the only people angry about the rising cost of food. In 2007, pasta prices sparked street protests in Milan. Mexicans marched against the price of tortillas. Senegalese protested the price of rice, and Indians took up banners against the price of onions. Argentina, China, Egypt, Venezuela and Russia are among the nations that have imposed controls on food prices in an attempt to contain a public backlash. Moreover, a middle-class lifestyle in these developing countries, even if more frugal than what is common in rich nations, is more energy-intensive. In 2006, China added as much electricity as France's total supply. Yet, millions in China lack reliable access to ele...

  • The Canadian government has set up a system to further the development of genetically engineered crops and plants. (Government and industry prefer to call these products "genetically modified organisms" or GMOs.) In this country, those crops are brought forward for open-air trials as "novel foods," foods that may be a little different than the conventional stuff of our diets, but are essentially the same. Canadian regulators focus on the end-product, not how it is produced. In fact, these genetically engineered crops are plants where one or two genes have been imported into the plant's genome in the laboratory. This transgenic manipulation could not happen in nature through conventional crossbreeding; it could only be done by scientists using DNA technology. Canada, along with the U.S. ...

  • The Harper government claims that it is keen to develop a strong policy towards Latin America. Yet it is a flawed approach, supporting US policy at a time when it is at its lowest point in decades, while ignoring both a clear leftward swing of elected Latin American governments in the last five years and the significant importance of Cuba in the region. This paper examines the Harper government's approach to Cuba. Following some general comments on the evolution of Canadian policy towards revolutionary Cuba, it examines some of the errors in the Harper approach, suggests an explanation for the approach employed, and makes suggestions about policies that Ottawa should consider to improve relations. In sports terms, Cuba "punches above its weight"-a fact which is known widely in Latin Ame...

  • * FOOD: The best deal is the combo plate. You have your choice of three for $9.50, and the portions are extremely generous. Don't leave without trying the scrumptious bulgogi. This marinated beef is usually served on a skewer. This time, it's stir-fried with bell peppers, but any way you try it, it's incredible. Also try japche (noodles with beef, spinach, mushrooms and red peppers). THERE'S always something to see at the Scottish Pavilion, where the show never ends and the people greet you with open arms. One visit and you'll know why this ultra-popular pavilion keeps breaking attendance records. Because the entertainment is continuous, no matter what time you go, you'll get to see some highland dancing and hear pipers do a rendition of Scotland the Brave. THIS pavilion is available o...

  • [Ben MacPhee-Sigurdson] said that we only carry wines from France. That is untrue since we have had a full and extensive wine list of "Old world and New world" wines (from Canada, U.S.A., Argentina, Australia, Chile France, Italy, Spain and New Zealand) since March 20, 2007. MacPhee-Sigurdson did mention in his article that he was a judge at last May's Winnipeg wine festival. We at Mirlycourtois entered that competition with our wine list of March 20 and won a silver award. Macphee-Sigurdson's statement could potentially hurt our business with customers not coming to try out our food, believing that we only have French wines available. Billboards have appeared around town that feature people expressing witlessly self-evident opinions about what Winnipeg's new airport should be like. One...

  • Canada "strongly supports" the WHO's Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, but the accompanying technical notes confirm Canada opposes the requirement for health-related labelling, one of the two labelling policy reforms the WHO assigned to the international committee. The food industry should only be required to reveal percentages if the company makes a "special emphasis" or description of one or more valuable ingredients, according to Canada's draft position on the so-called Quantitative Declaration of Ingredients in prepackaged foods. Industry groups do not support the proposal to disclose the percentage of fruits, vegetables, whole grains or added sugars because the "Quantitative Ingredient Declarations (QUID) was not intended to facilitate consumer understanding of...

  • Sometimes the end result can be a nail-biter, coming down to the final play. What better red to settle the nerves than the Bodega Renacer 2006 Punto Final Reserva Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina -- around $25, available at private wine stores)? I picked this big red up at G.J. Andrews Food & Wine Shoppe, and it's an MVP -- inky black in colour, with a big volatile nose of rubber, tar, ash and blackberries. The black fruit is slightly jammy/raisin-y on the palate, but is balanced by those drier, earthier notes. It's a bit alcoholic, with a hot tannic finish that will get the job done in the crucial final seconds. A definite food wine -- try with steaks, sharp cheese, or burgers with barbecue sauce if you're cooking during the game. 88+/100 OK, OK... so you'd really rather drink beer while...
