The state-of-the-art energy and water efficient facility would encompass approximately 8,000 square feet of land to the east of the site's Parkland building and would be powered through a combination of wind, solar and biomass-fuelled energy and geothermal heat. The daycare facility at the college's Dauphin campus is "woefully inadequate," Ward added, so ACC has also submitted a request for the funding needed to build a new daycare space as well as a new trades shop that would allow the college to expand apprenticeship training in the Parkland.

I wholeheartedly applaud Holly Johnson for her letter. We seem to be a city obsessed with preserving any old pile of bricks at the cost of progress. When somebody does take the initiative and proceeds with a new development, we of course have to criticize the design, as in the case of the new Winnipeg Regional Health Authority building at the corner of Main and Logan. The "experts" have to come along and tell us how unsuitable the new building is and how it doesn't fit in with the area.
Here's a moment of enlightenment for you: 99 per cent of the people in this city don't care what that WRHA building looks like. All they care about is that something is actually being done about the urban blight that's seemingly in every corner of our downtown. It's called progress. The sooner we shake t...

At a time when governments are making unprecedented investments in infrastructure, and local industry is crying out for graduates with the advanced training that our college system provides, this split doesn't effectively address the most critical problem facing Manitoba's economy: the skilled-trades shortage.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business reports that in the area of skills shortages, college graduates are currently required ahead of university graduates by a ratio of six to one. Further, more than 50 per cent of the careers listed in Manitoba's Report on High Demand Occupations require training at the college level. While enrolment in universities is levelling off or declining, Manitoba's college system is continuing to attract a record number of students. Not coincid...

Forestry is trying to reinvent itself, I guess across the country; certainly in this region so we've got to help with that and a big part of is some new training and education opportunities, and so yeah that's a very big part of that. Another one that's particular to our region is there's an energy project, a Five Nations energy project that's looking at the whole issue of energy delivery along the coast of James Bay on the west, and so that's something that's coming and we've got to be training for it now in order to be able to make sure that people of the region get access to the jobs that are going to be made available because of it.
"Plus what we've done is we've changed the model for delivery of the curriculum so that people can spend most of their time in their home communities ...
