Don't get me wrong. I'm not against summer programs. I think there is a lot out there for kids to do that will take them out of your hair for a period of time, engage them, and involve some sort of craft made out of insect legs that you can stick to your refrigerator with a magnet. What could be wrong with that? Nothing, as long as those of us who have gotten into the sad-yet-true game of measuring our parental status on the basis of how many activities our children are enrolled in don't forget to at some point over the summer just let our kids simply be kids. Let's get a grip, parents. Summer is about sunscreen on noses and plenty of room to run. But if that's still not enough to keep your young 'uns happy, here's some ideas of free and near-free activities that are guaranteed to keep...

We are working with the poorest of the poor (children)," said Ray Wieler, president of Children's Camp International. "They have nothing. When they get an experience like camp, it's probably one of the best experiences they'll ever have in their lives," said Wieler, who has been to India four times on church-related work. At the camp in India, for kids in the lowest caste, kids will play organized sports like soccer, volleyball and cricket. "Cricket to them is like hockey to us," Wieler said. They also do arts and crafts, group games, and receive three meals a day, something many of them don't receive at home due to poverty.
