Rating formats can also affect overall reactions to the appraisal system. This is because rater and ratee reactions to the rating format can be considered a component of their overall reactions to the appraisal system. Poor, invalid ratings may be expected from raters who react negatively to the rating format. Specifically, a rater who responds negatively to the rating format adopted by his or her organisation may not take appraisals seriously, thereby potentially compromising the quality of performance ratings. Moreover, a rating format that is seen as onerous and cumbersome may lead to negative rater reactions such that raters may refuse to use the scale (Tannenbaum, 2006). More favourable rater and ratee reactions are expected when the rating format provide specific and clear indicat...

This study investigates the inter- and intra-comparison of life and work values held by managerial employees working in large and well-established organisations in Singapore. Three groups of workers, namely the Singaporean Chinese, Japanese expatriates and PRC Chinese expatriates were surveyed to measure life and work values and job satisfaction. Our findings have demonstrated that there are significant variations in the life values and work values amongst the three nationalities. However, the Japanese and PRC Chinese expatriates shared similar life values, thus exemplifying the effects of Confucian Dynamism. At the intra-level, differences in the occupational level exert little influence on the life values of the three national samples and the work values of the Singaporeans; differenc...

The debate regarding Canadian training models continues today. Despite the disagreements, empirical research on the scientistpractitioner model in Canada is scant. Indeed, implementation of science training in clinical psychology programmes has not been systematically studied (Merlo, Collins, & Bernstein, 2008). The paucity of empirical research is made worse because student opinions on the matter have largely been unsolicited. Preliminary evidence suggests that American student opinions regarding the scientist-practitioner model vary widely, with some being staunch advocates and others describing it as a training anachronism ([Aspenson] et al., 1993). More recently, the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology (CUDCP) - a nonprofit organisation whose purpose is to fur...

This paper identifies two new tools, the Keirsey Temperament Sorter (KTS) and Derrida's deconstruction method, to identify cognitive differences between Australian, Thai, and Japanese managers. The KTS identifies one's temperament pattern, which describes ways in which human personalities interact with the environment to satisfy needs. Temperament theory has been extended to leadership/management theory to show that inborn temperament tendencies are differently distributed by cultural groups and these tendencies affect approaches to negotiations. Derrida's deconstruction method offers a new approach to identifying a culture's true diversity by recommending an analysis of the 'difference-to-oneself' within a culture before comparing 'difference-between' cultures. Results identified signi...

Slavery was a dominant phenomenon of antiquity. Gradually it has declined in the modern world. The blessings of modern moral attitudes and virtues were instrumental for these structural changes. Recently, child trafficking, especially female child trafficking has become a painful reality in Bangladesh. This child trafficking has been occurring internally and also across the border to India, Pakistan, Malaysia and many Middle Eastern countries. The rate of growth of this trafficking has been increasing alarmingly in this country. Every year several hundred (under the age of eighteen) children are being trafficked abroad. These trafficked children are adapting to a new life style which is different from the life style had they lived in their normal (life style which they supposed to follo...

In recognition of the growing importance of small business ownership by women to the economic well-being of national economies, considerable academic attention has been given to identifying the reasons why women enter self-employment. However, little is known about the motivations for women to become franchisors. This represents an important gap in the literature. While the absence of research may be due to early beliefs that women are risk averse individuals that tend to limit the growth of their enterprises, more recent studies conclude that women perceive small business ownership as a vehicle for rapid growth and wealth creation. On this basis, franchising should represent an appealing business expansion strategy as it minimizes capital, labor, and managerial limitations on firm grow...

Racial demarcation and social exclusion were common features in the organization of racially diverse colonial societies. British settlement in colonial Kenya and the import of immigrant workers resulted in the creation of a hierarchical society in which the Europeans enjoyed privileges to the exclusion of the immigrant Asians and the indigenous Africans. A study sets out to show how changes in the organization of this society and commonly held prejudices within it were reflected and even amplified in the organization of the accountancy profession. Drawing from archival and oral history data, the study traces the patterns of participation in accountancy of all three races. The study covers the period from the turn of the 20th century, which marked the arrival of the first British account...
