I serve at the pleasure of the board," [Patricia Dunn] said in an interview. "I totally trust their judgment. If they think it would be better for me to step aside, I would do that. But a number of directors have urged me to hang in there.
In yesterday's interview, Dunn branded the leaks as an "egregious breach" of HP's standards and emphasized the investigation was conducted with the full backing of the board. "This was not my spy campaign on our board."
Although a frequent tactic, the trickery -- known as "pretexting" -- tests the bounds of California law. California Attorney General Bill Lockyer is already convinced HP's investigation broke state law, but is still digging to determine the breadth of the violations.

[Jerry Brown] said he did not know if the probe could lead to exhumation of [Anna Nicole Smith]'s body, which is buried in the Bahamas. Brown said investigators had learned "quite a lot" from Bahamian authorities, but he declined to elaborate on grounds that it might jeopardize the investigation.
The Medical Board of California said in April it was investigating [Khristine Eroshevich], who, according to documents, authorized all 11 prescription medications found in Anna Nicole Smith's hotel room the day she died. Eroshevich had travelled with Smith to Florida.
A call to Eroshevich's lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, was not immediately returned. However, he told KNBC-TV that the investigation only concerned whether Eroshevich's prescriptions followed state law regarding controlled substances.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A Congressional committee asked Hewlett-Packard Co. yesterday to turn over records related to the company's possibly illegal investigation of media leaks, as the company's board planned to meet again to discuss the fate of embattled chairwoman Patricia Dunn.
Federal prosecutors also stepped into the fray yesterday, as HP revealed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it had been "informally contacted" by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California concerning the company's methods for rooting out who was giving confidential company information to journalists.
Although a common tactic among private investigators, 'pretexting' tests the bounds of California law.

There has been much written and published in the US about mortgage fraud and what, if anything, appraisal fraud may have contributed to the overall fraud problem. Appraiser influence occurs when you are pressured or coerced into doing something that contravenes the Institute's Code of Ethics, appraisal standards or your professional values. The most egregious form this has taken is appraiser identify theft; where a third party simply creates the report under your name or using your business name and letterhead. Preventing this type of fraud is a significant element of why the Institute partnered with Notarius for the provision of digital security services for reports and signatures. Preventing is a subject of increasing awareness in the US, where California ado...
