[Jean Jennings] said GM's ethanol announcement was the most exciting, in that it makes ethanol available for less than $1 per gallon, or less than a quarter per litre and, quoting GM's own figures, reduces CO2 emissions by 84 per cent compared with an equivalent amount of gasoline. Cellulosic ethanol, as it is called, answers two key criticisms of ethanol: that the rush to produce ethanol from such crops as corn has been threatening the world food supply, driving up the cost of corn-based livestock feed and other foods with corn, and that ethanol requires more energy to produce than it's worth. You have to applaud them," Jennings said of GM. "You know they're going to put a lot of money into the infrastructure (to produce and deliver ethanol).
