  • The Harper government claims that it is keen to develop a strong policy towards Latin America. Yet it is a flawed approach, supporting US policy at a time when it is at its lowest point in decades, while ignoring both a clear leftward swing of elected Latin American governments in the last five years and the significant importance of Cuba in the region. This paper examines the Harper government's approach to Cuba. Following some general comments on the evolution of Canadian policy towards revolutionary Cuba, it examines some of the errors in the Harper approach, suggests an explanation for the approach employed, and makes suggestions about policies that Ottawa should consider to improve relations. In sports terms, Cuba "punches above its weight"-a fact which is known widely in Latin Ame...

  • This paper presents the results of a research project developed to analyze and diagnose family co-responsibility in Spain. The basic goal of the research was to broaden our knowledge about how families negotiate the division of household labour and also to understand how the processes involved in such negotiation hinder or facilitate changes in gender roles. In this paper, we report our analysis and conclusions in relation to the implicit model implemented by parents in the socialization of shared family responsibility. The data used for the analysis were taken from a set of semistructured interviews carried out in a focus group context with Spanish parents. The analysis shows how the traditional, idealized model of co-responsibility has been substituted by a more individualistic one. H...

  • The "Middle Eastern Muslim family" has long been described as a patriarchal unit, and it has been noted that Muslim family laws have served to reinforce patriarchal gender relations and women's subordinate position within the family. The persistence of patriarchy is a matter of debate, and some feminist theorists argue that industrialized societies are also patriarchal. Walby (1990,1996) distinguishes between the "private patriarchy" of the pre-modern family and social order and the "public patriarchy" of the state and labor market in industrial societies. In his work on South Korea, lie (1996) has distinguished between agrarian patriarchy and patriarchal capitalism. In this article I use the term patriarchy in its strict rather than liberal sense-that is, in terms of [John Caldwell]'s ...

  • Without prompting, almost all of my research participants painted fairly uniform portraits of Gilgiti women in our interviews based on assumed knowledge of local women's everyday lives. As [Amanda], a 37-year-old Dutch teacher, proceeded to discuss her maidservants' various health-related ailments, she launched into a more extended description of local women's putatively onerous lives: "Here, the women are always suffering. They give too many children birth. And they let men handle them like weak people. That's their lot. They can't be seen or heard. That's a big problem here for me, the plight of Pakistani women." Local women's apparent lack of agency to fight their "lot" is almost as bluntly represented by 26-year-old Andy, who was "brought up in the UK to know that I did have a say, ...
