24 documents for bad weather riders
  • Think before hitting the road and don't risk driving around the barriers of closed highways -- that's the advice from RCMP who received hundreds of distress calls from motorists stranded in this weekend's blizzard. Five to 10 centimetres of snow was forecast with winds expected to reach up to 70 to 80 km/h with as low as - 18 C. In Westman, the storm forced the closure of portions of Highways 45, 16 and 10 and the Trans-Canada Highway from Headingley to the Saskatchewan boundary was closed.

  • With my headlight on and brightly colored gear, how could I be missed? I didn't stop to ask the driver of the car what he was doing or if he saw me. People who ride on base are especially aware of the hazard of riding and take prudent precautions such as bright colored clothing, full length pants and shirts, helmets, and sturdy footwear. [...] I see several motorcycle riders out on the road in shorts, sandals, tee shirts and no helmets.

  • When it's damp and cool and you get a nice weekend, you'll get extreme heavy use. This year, with the weather being consistently hot every weekend, we haven't had the big spikes, but we have had heavy weekends every weekend. Even mid-week we're having heavy beach use. "We've had to hand-water some of the greens during the day to keep them from drying out. Last year, the maintenance guys were mostly trying to pump water and keep the course dry. This year, they're enjoying the rainfall when we get it," he said. "We're calling it a payback year for us," she said in an interview. "We've had some pretty miserable years recently but this one is extremely different. The nice weather means everybody is in a good mood and they're out enjoying the town. The traffic is a lot higher than the last...

  • I have been a bus rider for many years, and have often come away from a bus ride thinking bus drivers are simply not paid enough to deal with some of the passenger behaviours I've been witness to, behaviour I would categorize as boorish, immature, or outright abusive. I've seen drivers been spit on, sworn at, threatened and grabbed. I've watched them politely try to deal with intoxicated individuals, even people who have got on the bus with bloody faces. I've watched them take the barbs of grumpy passengers who are angry the bus is running a little behind schedule (like any driver would purposely fall behind knowing they're going to get an earful at the next dozen stops). I take issue with your article Transit sees spike in rider complaints (June 15) which blames the spike in rider comp...

  • There is a prevailing, and false, assumption that most motor-vehicle accidents occur in winter, or in wet weather, when roads are presumed to be more dangerous, even if they are free of bicycles. In fact, a report by the province's vehicle licensing branch several years ago found that most fatal accidents occurred in summer on dry roads and under blue skies. The reason was believed to be related to the false confidence and higher speeds that occur in times of good weather and dry road conditions. It's not that slippery roads don't cause accidents, but statistics show that bad weather and road conditions tend to cause drivers to slow down, reducing the severity of injuries.

  • If you want to be leading rider, you have to ride every race. I've been leading rider here three times (2000, 2001 and 2005) and I've also been the leading stakes-winning rider and top money-earning rider. Now it's all about getting the good mounts. I'm happy riding for certain trainers who have confidence in me that when I come to the paddock, they know I'll give them 100 per cent. It's impossible to ride eight races every day and give 100 per cent each race. Then there's the job itself. "When I first came here, I rode a lot of horses that guys didn't want to ride, crazy horses," he said. "I guess that's why they call us pinheads. That's what you have to be to get on these things, because some horses are a little rank, or sore, or resent that guy with the helmet and the flak jacket."...

  • I didn't really know anything about it," [Derick Armstrong] said. "I was just happy to play. Seeing people in Jacuzzis (on the sidelines) during the game. I wasn't used to that. If that doesn't work, they throw batteries. "Double A's," [Brad Fotty] reported. "The square ones." "A typical Labour Day is pretty nuts, so you have to stay focused," allowed veteran Saskatchewan offensive lineman Gene Makowsky. "I try to keep the blinders on. But some games if you're ahead by a lot or behind, you notice things. The obvious inebriation. The streakers... One last party before the weather turns, I guess."

  • The city's transit system tallies up all praise and pans from bus riders annually, with more 3,700 complaints about Winnipeg Transit and over 1,200 commendations registered last year. [Jeffrey Hildebrandt] was named Winnipeg Transit's driver of the year last year for driving safely and earning praise from riders. But he said there are still peevish passengers who want their way. Hildebrandt said even good deeds can sometimes go sour. A few years ago he saw a girl between the ages of 10 and 12 trip and fall while running for the bus, and sprain her ankle. Hildebrandt said he got off the bus to check on her and after realizing she couldn't walk, scooped the girl up and carried her three blocks to her doorstep.

Gripes can fluctuate with weather . Winnipeg Transit has had a rocky ride in recent ...
