Peacekeeping has a place of pride in the Canadian national identity. Canadians feel that their nation is a natural leader in this international endeavour. How is this national identity expressed, and howhas it come about? Is it justified? An answer to these questions requires a probe of Canadian public and military attitudes, a historical review of Canada's peacekeeping activities, and an examination of current Canadian contributions. The final question is: What is needed if Canada is to live up to the image of the proud and prolific peacekeeper?

APPLE Inc. said Wednesday its profit in the holiday quarter edged up two per cent and beat Wall Street's expectations, buoyed in part by growing iPod sales outside the U.S. Carriers American Airlines and United Airlines said Thursday that they lost more money in the fourth quarter. United parent UAL Corp. lost US$1.3 billion, hurt by a wrong bet on the direction of oil prices. The company plans to cut 1,000 more jobs. The British pound fell to a nearly 25-year low against the U.S. dollar and a record low against the yen Wednesday amid mounting fears about the British banking sector and expectations the Bank of England will start pumping money into the economy within weeks.
The whole global banking system is being torn apart," Jory Capital president and CEO Patrick Cooney said in an interview. "It's the worst financial crisis in at least 70 years, if not a hundred (years). And it's going to get a lot worse. "It's going to be a lot higher than that," he said, adding, "we do these polls every 90 days and when we do our next one I think we're going to be shocked by the level of pessimism." What's more disconcerting, [John McCallum] said, is that it's the public sector that has been creating all the new jobs this year in Manitoba. He said federal transfer payments are expected to account for more than 30 per cent of the Manitoba government's revenues this year, and with the economy slowing and oil and other commodity prices plummeting, those payments are lik...

We are growing in the province and we want to reinvest in the province. We've grown the business organically and it makes great sense to revitalize our branches," he said in an interview from BMO's main branch and banking hall at Portage and Main. "It's a matter of pulling them out and focusing it much more directly on that industry," he said in an interview. "If we're not meeting the needs of industry, then we're not doing our jobs. That's what we're all about. [John MacAulay], BMO's vice-president for Manitoba, said the machines will also allow for "nimble upgrading" of new capabilities in the future. Some examples include services for sight and hearing-impaired clients as well as reading so-called chip cards, which are to replace the current magnetic stripe version in the next few ...

I doubt if this problem can ever be solved by city fathers and mothers, whether they're "reform"-minded or traditional. It can't be solved by banning cars, or improving public transit. Elevated monorails won't solve the congestion, and building more parking lots and better superhighways will only aggravate it. Fixing potholes -- well, fixing potholes is a great idea, and it will certainly help Gramps to hang on to his teeth, but much as it may do for dental hygiene, it won't reduce commute times to the downtown core. Simply put, traffic will only be solved by relieving people of the necessity to engage in it. Don't look to the mayor's office for a solution. Don't look to city hall, the Department of Highways, or to the federal Department of Transport. They can't help you. They're last c...

We've seen consolidation in banking, it seems logical we would see it on the asset management side, too. (The U.S. industry) might end up with six asset managers, each of whom are managing $1 trillion in assets instead of the 50 managers today," he said. [Ray McFeetors] told the meeting he was pleased to read media reports that federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is revisiting the March budget proposal that would remove Canadian corporations' ability to deduct interest on money borrowed to acquire or finance a foreign affiliate. "We're very hopeful that the minister will amend the budget proposal. Look at all the jobs we've created in Canada as a result of our investments activities abroad," he said. McFeetors said the acquisition environment in Canada, meanwhile, is "reduced.
