  • The development of Medium and small enterprises (SMEs) in China are feeing many difficulties to overcome its economic contradictions and problems. Financing will bear the brunt. As the SME's own characteristics, which is small and the controllable resources are scarcer, often are growing rapidly, and require large capital investments. The current situation of SME financing is not good. The paper contributes using the basic method of statistical analysis of variance according to the research on financing difficulties of SMEs in relation to their business risks. Firstly the solvency indexes reflect the businesses are illustrated. Secondly, the paper introduces the basic principles of variance analysis and homogeneity of variance test and variance analysis of multiple comparisons. Finally ...

  • Much has been said about the events surrounding the Chalk River NRU; stated simply, the NRU wasn't shut down for safety violations. AECL shut the reactor down for scheduled maintenance and the outage was extended by the regulator attempting to apply ill-fitting standards to a situation which became politically charged. Far from "trying to distance itself" from AECL, much of the world has accepted what happened for what it is. The only parties still raising concerns are our competitors and those having political axes to grind. All need something to counter the support of a large British trade union for the CANDU option and AECL's recent successes in Europe. As an employee, I'd love to know when AECL received billions of dollars in support from the Canadian government. The actual amounts ...

  • This paper presents the results of a research project developed to analyze and diagnose family co-responsibility in Spain. The basic goal of the research was to broaden our knowledge about how families negotiate the division of household labour and also to understand how the processes involved in such negotiation hinder or facilitate changes in gender roles. In this paper, we report our analysis and conclusions in relation to the implicit model implemented by parents in the socialization of shared family responsibility. The data used for the analysis were taken from a set of semistructured interviews carried out in a focus group context with Spanish parents. The analysis shows how the traditional, idealized model of co-responsibility has been substituted by a more individualistic one. H...

  • Collectively, they cover a wide assortment of topics related to human tactile and haptic sensing and its application, including sensation, perception, cognition and their underlying neural mechanisms, and how basic research on touch has been applied to the design of haptic interfaces for teleoperation and virtual environments. The papers also report on methods used by mechanical engineers and computer scientists to design haptic interfaces (hardware and software systems) for use in a wide range of teleoperation and virtual-environment application domains.

  • The first part of the book covers some methodological issues in research of human development and aging. Chapter 1 offers a broad review of the history of methodological development and some current debates, largely derived from [K. Warner Schaie]' s phenomenal Seattle Longitudinal Study. Chapters 2-4 discuss main issues in using factor analysis methodology, such as factor invariance, multilevel factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis, in the study of development and aging. Chapter 5 reviews the issues commonly involved in longitudinal studies (e.g., attrition, dropout, and retest effects) and urges considerations of cohort effects that have been routinely ignored in longitudinal studies in examining the convergence assumption. The convergence assumption postulates a similarit...

  • [...] the Public Health Agency of Canada simultaneously issued a press release claiming the researchers in Winnipeg were the first to "decode the genetic makeup of H1N1 flu virus." "This program is modernizing our laboratories and will quickly bring economic stimulus to this region," he said. While improved lab conditions are nice, many in the scientific community are still alarmed at the government's policies on basic scientific research.

  • In addition to that, as if being a busy neurosurgeon wasn't enough, founding, running and being the driving force behind ThinkFirst, he's led one of the world's leading spinal-cord basic science research labs. I always think of him first as a role model, but I don't know how he does it because he's got three or more full-time jobs that would be more than enough for any normal individual. He's the Superman of neurosurgery, I like to think. "There is still, though I hope it's becoming less frequent, an attitude of 'I can still play,'" [Patrick McDonald] says. "I had an example just this week of a boy who had a concussion, who is still symptomatic, headaches, dizziness and this mental fog that is common with concussion.

  • It is fitting that this leading Canadian psychology journal would choose to place the spotlight on the burgeoning discipline of in a Special Issue. Once widely perceived as a field in which psychologists "ended up" working, now is among the most highly respected areas of psychology, in terms of both science and practice. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Canada. Much of the seminal work in major areas of , including risk assessment, psychopathy, eyewitness testimony, victimology, credibility assessment, and criminal behaviour, has been done here. As James Ogloff (this issue) highlights, we ought to be extremely proud of our track record in forensic research. We must strive to continue in this tradition of basic research exce...

  • Canadians' support for the underlying values and structures of medicare still remains extremely high, according to all recent public opinion studies. However, their confidence is being tested by the persistent advocacy that increased private-for-profit payment and delivery be introduced in order to guarantee medicare's future sustainability. Patience is further being challenged as the public eagerly awaits (but does not yet sees) productive reforms actually being implemented into the system. Delay erodes public support. Alternative "solutions" gain currency. Thus, the public-private debate must be engaged fully and emerge from the shadows of public policy so that Canadians can determine its efficacy and its compatibility with our society's values. Therefore, the long overdue reforms als...

  • The National Research Council is Canada's principal research and development agency. Its 20 institutes are structured to address interdisciplinary problems for industrial sectors, and to provide the necessary scientific infrastructure, such as the national science library. Behavioural scientists are active in five institutes: Biological Sciences, Biodiagnostics, Aerospace, Information Technology, and Construction. Research topics include basic cellular neuroscience, brain function, human factors in the cockpit, human-computer interaction, emergency evacuation, and indoor environment effects on occupants. Working in collaboration with NRC colleagues and with researchers from universities and industry, NRC behavioural scientists develop knowledge, designs, and applications that put techno...
