  • With a taste so repulsive, you are guaranteed to lose weight. We could start the Altona sunflower seed diet and of course the Wheat City Tube steak diet, a steady feeding of hotdogs (formerly the Brandon pickle fest diet.) If any of the listed communities are interested in polluting the Internet with a diet named after their town, contact me directly for celebrity endorsement. Speaking of which, can someone please tell me where the lineup starts for the banana splits today? JOKE OF THE WEEK This monkey walks into a bar and asks the bartender, "Do you have any bananas?" The bartender says no, and the monkey leaves.

  • There are no tables in Myer's Deli -- the food is for take-out only -- and there's no trace of pork in this repertoire. Myer's kitchen may not be certified kosher but the specialties are Jewish, and Jewish dietary laws forbid the use of pork. Of course, one can buy corned beef or salami here, either on their own or in sandwiches, but what sets Myer's apart from many other delis is that it is one of the few sources for some old fashioned Yiddish comfort foods. Most of the knishes in the cooler have been imported from Gunn's, but a few are housemade, and those filled with meat are delicious ($9.49 for six ). So are the silken ravioli-like kreplach, filled with either minced beef or chicken ($9.99 a dozen). The kasha varnichkes -- i.e. bow tie pasta with buckwheat groats ($1.59 for 100 gra...

  • NANCY Ames hopes to give a whole new meaning to the term 'barley sandwich.' Ames said barley has health benefits that rival those of oats, which has been recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its ability to lower cholesterol. The health claim for oats made that crop an overnight sensation and is one of the reasons for the success of Portage la Prairie's Can-Oat Milling plant, which supplies several American food company giants. Ames said there's evidence foods made from barley may also help reduce the risk of certain cancers because of the grain's antioxidant properties. And there's also research to suggest barley could be helpful in lowering the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

  • When Darren Marshment's two-year-old daughter tasted a tender beef stew he'd made, rich with portobello mushrooms, and pronounced it "yummy," he was thrilled. "There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing them eat," he said of daughters Helen and Sofia, 3 1/2. WHEN Randolf Harrold and Diane Keevil Harrold were raising their two daughters, "every meal we could we ate together," they recall. This is their 40th wedding anniversary year, and dinner is still important to them. "We shop once or twice a week and we plan ahead on what we're going to do," said Harrold, manager of the bursary program for the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation. Some say learning to cook was a way to feed themselves affordably. "As a student, I didn't have any money," recalled [Jacques Hendlisz], now...

  • I like to call it a kitchen manual that not only helps you on your way to health but also gives you recipes. The book is a holistic approach. It looks at the physical, emotional, mental and at the spiritual, but the majority of it is nutritional," she says. "I wrote Eat Away Illness so I could put what I taught in my classes into a book so people didn't have to come and take a class. "I went gluten and dairy-free because a lot of people are being diagnosed with gluten intolerance. Everything in the book is gluten-free and if it's not, it has other choices," she says. "And this book doesn't have anything unhealthy in it. A lot of the gluten-free products out there now are made with white rice flour, tapioca starch, potato starch and lots of sugar. My book has no sugar and all the glute...

  • Another reason is probably the prime rib roast -- ours was tender and flavourful and came in precisely the degree of rareness requested. ($21.95 for the Gent's cut, $19.95 for the Lady's), partnered by quite a nice, moist Yorkshire pudding. On the principle that beef is the thing to have here (the menu tells us it's all AAA aged Angus beef) we also tried a New York steak sandwich -- garnished with fries, mushrooms, onions rings and a pleasant cole slaw -- and it too was tasty and tender ($12.95). Rae & Jerry's is where, in fact, many of us did grow up, and there can't be more traditional dinners than R & J's prime rib roast, albeit without Yorkshire pudding. Other old reliables are steaks, calves' liver and simple preparations of fresh fish. For a lovely country inn in a gloriou...

  • When was the last time you bought pickles from a tub? Ever? Well, now you can, and they are big, crunchy and delicious, with the half-sour flavour of cukes that haven't been brined very long. You'll find them at the Russian Deli, a seemingly tiny place next to what once was Harman's drugstore. But there's more here than meets the eye from out front since it stretches into a sizable L-shaped area in the rear. You can still have a Kosher corned beef on rye ($5.75), but Desserts Plus (for take-out only these days) has recently expanded its repertoire of microwave-ready meals to include such Yiddish comfort staples as garlicky beef brisket with buckwheat kasha and a few spears of asparagus, or a light and flavourful meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a blah mixture of frozen veggies ($12.95 ...

  • IT'S been there for several years, which is usually a real measure of success. But if you don't live in the St. Boniface area, you probably don't know about it. Unless, of course, you're a restaurant critic, and a reader writes to tell you how much he likes it. It is attached to a bakery-cum-grocery store that is loaded with Dutch products, and the cafe offers an opportunity to sample two of them -- only two, alas. The kroketten, for instance, creamy-centred meat croquettes that are breaded, fried and served with bread and mustard. They can also be purchased for take-out in packages from the store's freezer, which is where you'll also find imported matjes herring fillets, smoked eel and smoked mackerel. The other Dutch treat is the hearty and delicious pea soup -- usually served on Frid...
