  • South Park guys Trey Parker and Matt Stone seem to think so. Indeed, the prescient duo anticipated [Mel Gibson]'s recent breakdown in the 2004 season of South Park in the Passion of the Jew episode. Mel is portrayed (in the cut-out photo-style animation typically reserved for Saddam Hussein) as a flat-out looney when Kenny and Stan go all the way to L.A. to ask the star for their money back after seeing The Passion of the Christ. ("That wasn't a movie; that was a snuff film," says an outraged Stan.) History may judge it differently, especially given Parker and Stone's astute observation that most of Gibson's films deal with the theme of "redemption through torture." They cheekily suggest Gibson is more attracted to the latter than the former.

  • [Chuck Levine] and [Larry Valentine] is basically 100 minutes of gay panic jokes -- including the most literal rendering of the don't-bend-over-in-the-shower gag ever committed to film -- followed by a 15-minute public service announcement about tolerance and acceptance. In this overly pious conclusion, [Adam Sandler]'s character announces that "faggot" is a bad word. "It's hurtful." (Gee, did Isaiah Washington already mention that in his PSA?) Jessica Biel, playing the men's lawyer Alex McDonough, becomes the latest beautiful girl eager to prove she's a good sport by falling in love with Adam Sandler. Because Larry has been designated "the wife" in the relationship -- because of "his sensitive eyes" -- Alex takes him on a girls' day out. This tender little scene culminates in Alex boa...

  • It's his first dramatic feature," said Jeremy Torrie of High Definition Pictures. "He's excited. "There's nobody in Canada who wants to invest in feature films," says Torrie, who co-produced the TV movie Cowboys & Indians: The Killing of J.J. Harper. "He loves the story," Torrie says. "Fishing is a universal pastime and everyone can identify with father-daughter relationships."

  • [Alan Moore] hasn't liked any cinematic versions of his other works. Well, nobody liked the botch-job that was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. But one could argue the movie version of the Jack the Ripper opus From Hell was an admirable and necessary distillation of his graphic novel of the same name (which was, in many people's opnions, totally unfilmable in its grisly graphic novel form). Again, Moore's name isn't even in evidence on this movie by James McTeigue, adapted by Andy and Larry Wachowski (The Matrix Trilogy). And Moore may have a point as he accuses the movie of altering characters to suit the filmmakers' sensibilities, and of transforming conflicts to reflect current realities. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with that. In any case, it has to be said...

  • Scripted by newcomer Russell Gewirtz, the plot here unfolds in refreshingly unpredictable style, which [Spike Lee] serves with a minimum of editorializing. Lee's tendency to sermonize derailed his 1995 adaptation of Richard Price's novel Clockers, sacrificing narrative coherence for a self-conscious meditation of black-on-black violence. The DVD extras include a doc in which [Denzel Washington] and Lee discuss this, their fourth collaboration (after Malcolm X, Mo' Better Blues and He Got Game. It's called Number 4. In the film, a gangster (Edmund O'Brien) hires a talent agent (Tom Ewell) to turn [JAYNE MANSFIELD] into a pop star, despite the fact she can't sing, and is more interested in starting a family than starting a singing career.

  • I'm not buying my Porsche yet," [Jake MacDonald] said yesterday from Toronto, where he is on vacation. "But I had lunch with [Jeremy Torrie] (on Wednesday), and it looks like it might happen. A document Torrie e-mailed to the Free Press lists 18-year-old Vancouver actress Jessica Amlee as being cast in the title role. Amlee's numerous credits include roles in the movies Eve and the Firehorse and My Life Without Me. "Jeremy is a can-do kind of fellow," MacDonald said. "He's the epitome of positive thinking. He's a never-say-die guy."

  • One of my very favourite Simpsons moments took place in Season 8, in the episode Homer's Enemy. In that one, a new power-plant employee named Frank Grimes (Frank Welker), a guy who has had to fight for everything in his life, goes berserk when confronted with Homer's good life, and the total lack of effort he put into his achievements. Suffice it to say, the episode ends at a funeral with one of the most darkly funny moments of any Simpsons episodes. Director Barry Sonnenfeld, usually a very funny guy, is compelled to get the yuks at the expense of [Robin Williams]' corporate drone, who is told by his unfeeling boss that he will have to cancel a long-planned Hawaian vacation to attend a meeting in Colorado. Williams responds by announcing he's taking the family on a road trip in a recre...
