Steinbach Credit Union's new 43,000-square-foot branch at 1575 Lagimodiere Blvd. and Sunova Credit Union's new 7,500-square-foot outlet in Oakbank will bring to seven the number of new credit union branches that have either been built or announced within the last two and a half years.
Sunova's Oakbank branch is expected to be the province's greenest building when it opens in June or July of next year. Sunova president and CEO Edward Bergen said that new branch -- the institution's 10th in Manitoba -- will be built to LEED Platinum standards, which is the highest rating under the international Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

Created in 2008 with the amalgamation of Cypress River, Hartney, Tiger Hills, Turtle Mountain and Virden credit unions, SunRise's arrival in the Brandon market was a "no-brainer," board chair Terry Wakely says. Since the merger took effect last October, SunRise has seen its assets grow to more than $530 million - eighth among Manitoba's 45 credit unions.

The bundled assets often included subprime mortgage loans made to U.S. homeowners who often had a bad credit history. When the U.S. housing market slid, so did clarity on the value of the mortgages, which sent investors into a tailspin as they tried to tack a value on the packages.
