Essar Global plans to spend $500 million to upgrade and expand operations at Algoma Steel Inc. after shareholders of the northwestern Ontario steelmaker accepted the Indian conglomerate's takeover bid, Algoma CEO Denis Turcotte said Monday.
In the Algoma Steel deal, Essar's offer represented a 48 per cent premium over Algoma's average share price in the 20-day period ended Feb. 14, when the company confirmed it was in discussions about a possible sale to then-unidentifed parties.
Turcotte said Essar's recent acquisition of Minnesota Steel, across Lake Superior, will provide more than enough raw and semi-finished materials for Algoma, including iron ore pellets, hot briquette iron and steel slabs.
