If you're reading about DRIPs for the first time and wondering why you don't have them, there's a reason. First of all, there are only about 100 or so stocks that offer DRIPs in Canada, plus another 100 income trusts. (See the accompanying box for a partial DRIP list.) Second, they don't kick in automatically when an investor buys shares, they have to be set up with a broker. Sometimes, the company itself will offer the option, but it's best to check with your investment adviser to see where you can or can't DRIP.
