Chan Buddhism is an influential school of Buddhism in China; the philosophic thinking it advocates has influenced Chinese music and culture in many ways, which results in four orientations of the development of Chinese music: firstly, Chinese music put emphasis on its artistic conception; secondly, Chinese music emphasizes spiritual charm; thirdly, Chinese music values self-intuition; fourthly, Chinese music values natural beauty.
There are approximately 5,000 or so in 20 groups. There are also many "closet" Buddhists, and some Christians, Jews, Hindus and yogis practice Buddhism, too. This all makes Buddhists hard to count. YOU can't fault the Dalai Lama for optimism. I suppose that might come from being the Buddha born-again, the most recent in a long list of reincarnations that makes him the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, an inspiration of piety and pacifism to people around the world, as well as a huge hit among Hollywood actors -- only Scientology, it seems, appeals to more of these keen intellects than Tibetan Buddhism.
