Chan Buddhism is an influential school of Buddhism in China; the philosophic thinking it advocates has influenced Chinese music and culture in many ways, which results in four orientations of the development of Chinese music: firstly, Chinese music put emphasis on its artistic conception; secondly, Chinese music emphasizes spiritual charm; thirdly, Chinese music values self-intuition; fourthly, Chinese music values natural beauty.

There are approximately 5,000 or so in 20 groups. There are also many "closet" Buddhists, and some Christians, Jews, Hindus and yogis practice Buddhism, too. This all makes Buddhists hard to count.
That there are as many types of Buddhism as there are versions of Christianity; that while it is growing rapidly in the West, it is not centralized and there is no overall plan of propagation; and that Buddhism is not god/God centred, and does not teach the existence of an eternal soul.
That Buddhists do not worship Satan, as some groups charge -- there is not even a real Satan in Buddhism.

I think there's a huge benefit (in [Lin]'s presence) because I can tell our students that our understanding of our faith is culturally conditioned and is limited by our culture, but it's much different to have someone here say how different it is," explains Arthur Walker-Jones, who teaches several of the graduate-level courses Lin is taking. "Our students can start to learn about some of the theologies and history of Africa and Asia.
"In China, the culture consists of Buddhism and Taoism and Confucianism," says Lin, who was raised in a Christian home. "Christianity is a foreign religion and it's not part of Chinese culture."
"I'm thinking it will open my mind and I will learn a lot of knowledge I haven't learned before because I'm learning from theological books in English," says Lin ...

YOU can't fault the Dalai Lama for optimism. I suppose that might come from being the Buddha born-again, the most recent in a long list of reincarnations that makes him the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, an inspiration of piety and pacifism to people around the world, as well as a huge hit among Hollywood actors -- only Scientology, it seems, appeals to more of these keen intellects than Tibetan Buddhism.
Every time, however, the Dalai Lama raises the issue, and he does it frequently, Beijing hammers it -- kind of like diplomatic whack-a-mole. Nevertheless, this week two Tibetan monks arrived in Beijing, sent by their leader to see if the Chinese might agree to open talks. China received them, but also set the Dalai Lama up for the inevitable disappointment.

I thoroughly enjoyed the articles by Dan Lett and Mia Rabson documenting the latest acts of Tory patronage, including the plum position for [Taras Sokolyk]'s wife. While these rewards to the party faithful do not surprise me in any way, it is still hard to take after the "holier than thou" promises by Stephen Harper and his cronies. This is not at all "the new government of Canada." Instead, this is a desperate and worried government that is making sure that at all costs their friends are in positions of power so that when they lose government they will have some insider influence. How predictable.
We find it disturbing that our legislators in Manitoba believe that "all power and wisdom" comes from an "Eternal and Almighty God." The vast majority of our knowledge and wisdom comes from o...
