A French military museum in the Norman city of Caen is breaking with the past on June 6 when it will present a major exhibition on the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the first such gesture outside the United States. "It's an attack against America (and) we want to tell that story," the museum's director said.
Relations between the two countries have been only lukewarm since the 1960s when France pulled out of NATO in protest over American domination of the military alliance. But they reached an historic low in 2003 when France denounced the U.S. invasion of Iraq. It caused a major rift in relations, culminating in spontaneous campaigns in America to boycott French goods and companies. French fries were even renamed Freedom fries.

MY father, Capt. Harry Marantz, was felled by German artillery on Aug. 14, 1944, in the fighting to cross the bridge at Clare Tizon in Normandy, one of the many battles of the Falaise pocket. As a doctor, he was detached from the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps to the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Winnipeg. As was the practice, those slain on the battlefield were buried temporarily where they fell, pending relocation to a permanent burial site when circumstances permitted. Official reports indicated that father was first buried in a garden behind a hedge in Clare Tizon.
We found monsieur Bernard Flais in a centuries-old farmhouse, built around the traditional Norman square with house and outbuildings forming the sides. He immediately invited us in and informed us that he, as a 17...
