On Friday, CancerCare Manitoba and the provincial government unveiled an ambitious plan, based on a British model, to reduce cancer treatment wait times to two months -- from the current three to nine months. Shorter treatment wait times and patient advocates will improve survival rates and reduce stress for families, said Cook, who is now a member of the board of the Canadian Cancer Society.
After I looked at the CD-ROM, I wasn't really afraid of anything," [Justina Erb] says with a sweet smile and a maturity beyond her years. "It's a small patient population, but it's a population that needs tremendous support," [David Wiljer] says of the roughly 500 children needing radiation treatment in Canada each year, about 150 of them through Sick Kids Hospital. "This is one of the tools that we can provide to them to help through a very difficult time." "There's always going to be some anxiety," she concedes. "They've been through so much by the time they get here. It helps them get an understanding of what's going on."

When a cancer patient and their family speak about their cancer experience, they focus on the emotional and financial impact of the cancer system on themselves including costs associated with treatment and loss of income, access to information that helps them to understand the disease and access to emotional support and information.
It's hard enough to be battling cancer, but to be spending extended periods of time when you're not feeling well in the car ... the more we can do as a government to lower that ... time, the better," Manitoba Health Minister Theresa Oswald said yesterday.

Officially titled Probing for Cancer With Smart shRNA, his project is "looking at the way we deliver cancer drugs. The building will house a linear accelerator which produces high-energy X-rays that target cancer cells and will be the province's first radiation therapy site outside of Winnipeg.
