The church, in the 200-block of 11th Street, has been "in suppression" since last July, following a decree from Archbishop James Weisgerber that it be closed due to a diminished need for a Polish-speaking parish and the shrinking number of parishioners, baptisms and marriages.In his decree, Weisgerber also recommended that the blending of the parish with that of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church would be more efficient. Under canon law, the building and surrounding land is owned by the archdiocese, says Weisgerber, and that means it is completely within its rights to use the building to meet the needs of the Spanish-speaking families.
