Beaches is located near the Turks and Caicos' largest city -- Providenciales, or Provo for short (that's what the locals call it). Turks and Caicos is sparsely populated with a total population of only about 22,000 people. Southeast of the Bahamas in the Caribbean Sea, it's a British Overseas Territory that uses the U.S. dollar as its currency and English as its national language. There are two island groups, eight main islands and a number of smaller islands, all of them uncrowded or unpopulated. Some of the smaller islands feature private fly-in homes owned by wealthy foreigners. The climate is generally sunny and dry so the weather is favourable pretty much year-round.
My son and I flew in to Provo from Winnipeg on U.S. Airways via Toronto and Charlotte N.C. It was late May but duri...

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands -- Gustav became a hurricane again on Friday as it plowed toward Cayman Islands resorts, the start of a buildup that could take it to the U.S. Gulf Coast as a fearsome Category-3 storm three years after hurricane Katrina.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Gustav could grow to a Category 3 storm, with winds above 180 km/h, by the time it hits the U.S. Gulf coast next week. Gustav could strike anywhere from the Florida Panhandle to Texas, but forecasters said there is a better-than-even chance that New Orleans will get slammed by at least tropical-storm-force winds.
Along the U.S. Gulf Coast, most commemorations of the Katrina anniversary were cancelled because of Gustav, but in New Orleans a horse-drawn carriage took the bodies of Katrina's last...

Turks and Caicos is becoming more popular. There's a buzz," [Mike] tells me over the phone in Winnipeg. They feel they've bought in at the right place and at the right time. Their property is in a professionally managed rental pool and rents for $3,500 a night in the high season to $2,200 a night in the low season when they are not using it. If they hadn't bought it when they did, Mike tells me, they certainly wouldn't be able to afford to rent it now.
Wondering if they made the right decision, at Christmas time the couple took a Caribbean cruise to visit as many other island communities as possible in an effort to see if there was anything they were missing out on elsewhere. "The cruise ships have ruined those places," Mike says of many more-heavily visited ports of call. Of T&C h...

The Sonaisali Island Resort, for instance, is actually located on a tiny island situated a matter of metres from the "mainland." A selection of 91 bures run parallel to the shoreline and are fronted by a wide swath of sand. Within the central resort building are buffet and à la carte restaurants, plus 32 guest rooms on the floors above. The "biggest pool in Fiji" faces the sea and offers watery relief from the heat. This is a great place for families.
Places like Sonaisali are the opposite in character of the more far-flung properties such as the Cousteau and [Matangi] resorts. Both of these are located in Fiji's "friendly North," the least visited of Fiji's tourist regions.
Getting to either will require an hour-plus flight from Fiji's Nadi international airport, on board a twin-prop b...

The entire country of Belize has a population of only 310,000, compared to over 13 million people living next door in Guatemala. That is part of the charm of this small Central American country. Located just south of Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula, Belize has the feel of a tiny, island paradise. Unlike its northern neighbor, Belize hasn't capitalized on the tourism industry like Cancun and Cozumel on the Mayan Riviera.
That's because Belize has it all. The tiny country boasts the world's second-largest coral reef, comparable only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. For divers and snorkelers, it is paradise. There are more than 200 cayes, or small islands, that dot the coastline of Belize and offer countless opportunities to explore with postcard-perfect white sand beaches and p...
