[Karen Busby]'s mother, who died in April, was a nurse, but her wage wasn't as lucrative as welfare, especially when it was spread out among such a large household with no child support from Busby's father. But Busby's mother went on to lead and win a national federal nurses strike that effectively doubled nurses' wages.
We're very skeptical of government regulation of free expression because it virtually always backfires," said Busby. "Censorship laws have not worked in our favour. We've been subject to censorship since the dawn of time.
Busby came out in the mid-1990s -- after she got tenure at the University of Manitoba's law school -- and in 2003 joined the board of Egale, a national gay rights group. In Winnipeg's active and tight-knit gay and lesbian community, Busby became the ...

Like a great number of other people from our city, I attended the funeral of Cpl. James Arnal. As most of us are aware, he was our 88th soldier killed in Afghanistan. I was one of the people lucky enough to know James as he was a schoolmate/hockey mate of my son as a young teenager. During the service, I could not help but notice the support the family of James has received from the families of other soldiers killed in the line of duty. I am ashamed to admit I could not remember the name of even one other soldier who has been killed. I guess that's my point. We remember criminals and great sports heroes but seldom remember the soldiers who sacrifice their lives so we can enjoy our great city.
