There is a Norman Rockwellian humility to [Greg Mortenson] as he describes the difficulties in building schools in mountainous Asia paid for by the Central Asia Institute (CAI), an organization he co-founded in 1996 whose mission is to educate girls in the remotest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
As Mortenson points out, the CAI has established 131 schools currently serving more than 58,000 students, most of them girls, and it "never used a dollar of federal government USAID funds to build a school or buy a pen," relying instead on generous benefactors and old-fashioned fundraising.
The narrative begins with Mortenson's promise to build a school for a Kirkhiz community called Bozai Gumbad in Afghanistan's isolated Wakhan Corridor, a 200-kilometre-long narrow stretch of land surrounde...

The objective of this study is to analyse influences of traditional Chinese roof construction elements to the roof design of Kampung Laut's Old Mosque in Malaysia. The result of this study can be used as an evidence that Islam came to South East Asia (the Malay Archipelagos) from East (China) in contrast to the most arguments claimed that Islam came from West (India and Arabian region). This study conducts roof construction analysis on Kampung Laut's Old Mosque (KLOM), which is the oldest mosque in Malaysia. There are several historical studies already shows evidences to support this argument. This argument however will be supported through architectural study. The study on the roof design elements are made in the literature study. The analysis finds that KLOM has principle roof constru...

Accurate predictions for trends in travel are an important component in future planning for resorts and tour operators around the world. It is for this reason that research companies like Ipsos Reid, Deloitte, and D.K. Shifflet & Associates, are able to charge mega bucks to provide projections from their extensive analysis. While the messages can sometimes differ, they also include many commonalities. Because the Euro keeps gaining in strength against the U.S. dollar in particular, European travel is expected to decline somewhat, while Latin America begins a progressive surge. South and Central America are gaining credibility in part, it is said, because the old image of South American dictatorships and machine guns is disappearing in favour of tourism infrastructure projects ini...

CLAIRE Leger and Christina Beerenfenger want Canada's soldiers brought home from Afghanistan. Dale Wilson and Toyo Turner say the mission must continue, despite the rising cost in Canadian lives.
This war doesn't make any sense at all," says Claire Leger, whose son Sgt. Marc Leger was one of the first Canadians to die in Afghanistan, a victim of the U.S. friendly fire bombing of April, 2002.

The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and Doer government launched an $80,000 program Friday to recruit businesses to locate around Winnipeg's airport and its inland port development.
The Doer government believes the inland port project will make Winnipeg a transportation hub in North America. The hope is that by taking advantage of Winnipeg's central location, imported goods flown in from Asia can be distributed more widely throughout the continent, and that goods produced in North America can be exported to Asia through Winnipeg's airport.

This saves lives, big time. To not use this resource if it is available would be a crime," said Lt.-Col. Nicolas Eldaoud, who oversees the Canadian Forces' immensely complicated logistics chain in Central Asia from the main base at Kandahar. "Every time we have an air drop, it means we don't need to send out a combat logistics patrol that puts my soldiers in harm's way.
"What the convoys do is very dangerous and we can eliminate that by delivering cargo right to their doorstep," the 43-year-old Hamiltonian said. "We will do this for any NATO nation that asks, but there is extra meaning when do it for the Canadians because they can see the Maple Leaf on our tail when we fly past."
"Essentially we establish a run-in track, come in as quick as we can, slow down suddenly to drop the cargo...
