  • A terrorist attack has blown apart a city square in "North Africa" (let's presume they mean Syria), leaving Douglas's fellow agent dead and Douglas himself overseeing the case of Egyptian-American Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally). A chemical engineer living in Chicago, Anwar has been linked to a member of an Islamic terrorist group by some dubious cellphone records. That bit of info is all the CIA needs to arrange an "extraordinary rendition," which basically sees terror suspects kidnapped and transported to countries where torture is freely practised by the state. In Anwar's case, that places him in the torture cell of professional interrogator Abasi (Yigal Naor), whose method is simply to keep torturing his victims until they confess, all notions of due process scorned. • A study examines accounting in a sugar refinery from 1900 to 1920 in two arenas of operation. The geography of accounting enabled the workers at Chelsea to have their working experience sequestered by the company. Accounting routinized their work at the refinery, enabling their labor to become monitored, empty of meaning, and, at times, overwhelming. The ideology of accounting provided the company with an instrument of evasion to silence the voice of labor and an instrument of self-deception designed to justify and insulate the authoritarian hierarchy of the company and the power of its Australian general manager, Edward Knox. Accounting became an ideology that sought to legitimate the exploitation of the workforce and the generous return to shareholders.

  • Noise exposure has been the focus of research attention for nearly 40 years, since the classic work by Glass and Singer (1972). Several studies have documented adverse effects of chronic noise exposure on children, including disrupted reading acquisition (Bronzaft & McCarthy, 1975; Evans & Maxwell, 1997), memory impairment (Hygge, Evans, & Bullinger, 2002), and physiological stress responses (Evans, Hygge, & Bullinger, 1995). Fortunately, these effects appear to be reversible: The introduction of noise attenuation strategies resolved reading problems in elementary school children (Bronzaft, 1981), and the end of chronic noise exposure (because of the closing of a nearby airport) reversed the adverse effects on memory (Hygge et al., 2002). There is mounting evidence that ...
