The big three macronutrients that plants need are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Nitrogen aids the healthy growth of leaves, phosphorus encourages root development, and potassium promotes flowering and fruit production. A chemical fertilizer of 20:20:20 would have a balanced ratio of NPK. Other macronutrients such as calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S) are usually present in sufficient amounts in healthy garden soil, so applying plant food is not always needed. Sulfur is naturally produced in adequate amounts from the ongoing decomposition of soil organic matter.
