  • Programs touched by the United Way include Coats for Kids, Brandon Food for Thought, Helping Hands, Big Brothers and Sisters, CNIB, Canadian Red Cross Society (Brandon Branch), Samaritan House, Tools for Schools, Learning Disabilities Association, Westman Immigration Services, Brandon Family YWCA, and Child and Family Services. She said that United Way's success is dependent upon community support. [...] building a better Brandon is a tribute to a variety of people: a board of directors numbering 18 local citizens, a staff team of three who work 365 days a year to help the community, a campaign team of approximately 250 volunteers who help with the annual fall campaign, and thousands of donors who support United Way in the community each year.

  • Upon hearing of the death of Edwin Kimelman, I was saddened by the loss of such a powerful and influential man. I run the Warriors of Lost Boys, a group devoted to providing a voice for the aboriginal children who were stolen from their families and placed in group foster homes in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. Justice Kimelman was a staunch supporter of the rights of children and those who have fallen through the cracks of child and family services and the welfare system. I humbly respect and send our support and deepest sympathies to the family of an incredibly spirited man. We know that his spirit will live on and continue to aid a great many children who have become victims and survivors. Grand Chief Ron Evans of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs spoke of the need for more funding to ensur...

  • TEN YEARS AGO The Inglis Area Heritage Committee (IAHC) got a financial boost from the provincial government for the restoration of five historic grain elevators in the village. More than $27 million is being directed toward initiatives that reduce child poverty, help lower-income working families and support early childhood development, according to Family Services Minister Bonnie Mitchelson.

  • The documents allege [Eric Robinson] has not paid the firm anything since June 2009. "Mr. Robinson retained Myers Weinberg LLP to represent him regarding child-support proceedings against him,'' says the claim. "He was periodically billed for services rendered and disbursements incurred.'' It notes that Robinson made "periodic payments to bring the balance down.

  • This paper explores child support recalculation options for Ontario in light of the recent Supreme Court cases D.B.S. v. S.R.G.; L.J. W. v. T.A.R.; Henry v. Henry; Hiemstra v. Hiemstra (D.B.S.). Because Ontario lacks a public recalculation service, and because D.B.S. puts the onus on recipient parents to request increased support, individual parents are currently forced to renegotiate child support arrangements in the private sphere. The author suggests that this leaves recipient parents vulnerable to ongoing threats of domestic violence. As potential alternatives, she examines the recalculation regimes implemented in two Canadian jurisdictions. While Newfoundland has implemented an administrative scheme, Manitoba's formalized process relies heavily upon the courts. Ultimately, the auth...

  • Yale University's Edward Zigler Centre in Child Development and Social Policy released a report last week that found that prekindergarten programs in the U.S. expel children at a rate three times as high as the kindergarten to Grade 12 system. Kathy Reid, director of the Manitoba child-care program, said the province spends $10 million annually on support services for preschool children, but could not say how that compares to what public schools have available for special-needs kids.

  • I am writing in regard to 17-year-old Patrick Ross, the young man who has decided on a military career with the support of his loving foster mother. His only problem is Child and Family Services is holding him back. CFS has the right to put his life on hold until his 18th birthday. How ironic: CFS seemed absent in so many cases, such as Phoenix Sinclair, so why is it so heavy-handed in this case. We read in the Free Press about so many young men his age stealing cars, doing drugs and committing acts of violence and CFS deals with them all. So when a decent young man decides to do the honourable thing, the roadblocks go up. Why? Whenever I have watched "streeters" (interviews with the "common man on the street") there is always one guy who says, "Bah! Politicians! They're all crooks!" Pe...

  • When I read the story about the 18-year-old whom Child and Family Services discontinued support for I was disturbed. If not at 18, then when? There has to be a limit somewhere. The young girl has been fortunate to have had caring, loving foster parents who are apparently still willing to give her the support she needs.

  • ABORIGINAL CHILD WELFARE: First Nations and the Doer government have been begging Ottawa to invest more in kids in care on reserves, especially in support services for families in crisis. But there's only $20 million for child welfare over two years sprinkled over the entire country, even though the federal auditor general slammed Ottawa for its funding model. GREEN ENERGY: There's money to help Canada "transition to a greener global economy" but the project that earned the most attention wasn't wind or solar or hydro, but carbon capture and storage research that could allow coal-fired power plants to keep chugging.
