[Dave Mustaine] is one of metal's all-time greatest guitarists and he proved it on songs like Wake Up Dead, Hangar 18 and Holy Wars, which have more great riffs per song than most bands have on an entire album. He loves the riff, and every song features at least one solo, but songs like Eye of the Tornado and Skin O' My Teeth show off his melodic side.
Megadeth's set ended at 11 p.m., but the musical mayhem started five-and-a-half hours earlier with Oakland's High on Fire, a power trio that mixes thrash, sludge and some stoner rock into a bludgeoning stew that pummelled the small crowd who made it in and proved why they rank with Mastodon and Lamb of God as one of the top bands of the new wave of American heavy metal.

The Grammy-nominated Virginia metal band will hit Winnipeg in April in support of its sixth album, Wrath, which is slated for release on Feb. 24. And the headbanging heroes won't be tearing up the joint alone: also on the bill are Finnish power metal outfit Children of Bodom, As I Lay Dying, God Forbid, and (attention Bartley Kives) Municipal Waste.

Thrash veterans Megadeth will headline the fourth annual Gigantour, which also features Children of Bodom, High on Fire, In Flames and Job for a Cowboy. The tour was curated by Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine.
Friday will be a busy day at the local branch of the North American ticket agent. That's the day tickets go on sale for the previously announced George Thorogood concert at the MTS Centre May 23 with Taj Mahal and the Blind Boys of Alabama. Tickets are $35.50 and $49.50.
