Our Chinese friends must understand the worldwide concern that there is about the question of Tibet, and I will adapt my response to the evolutions in the situation that will come, I hope, as rapidly as possible," he said in southwest France.
If you live in China and rely on mainstream Chinese media, the Beijing Olympic torch was lit in Greece on Monday without a hitch, "a perfect start on the road to gold" is how the official China Daily put it.
"Chinese netizens, including those studying overseas, are fighting back to discredit often distorted and sometimes dishonest reports by western media about the recent events in Tibet," said the government-backed China Daily in a front-page story Tuesday.

The food issue involves co-operation among many departments. This is very important," [Wang Longde] said on the sidelines of a news conference in a rare high-level comment on China's attempts to regain consumer confidence.
Wang's comments came the same day an official newspaper reported that the People's Liberation Army -- the world's largest military -- has ordered improved safety checks and will buy food only from suppliers who pass local government hygiene and safety tests
"To strengthen food safety is to guarantee the PLA's combat capacity," the China Daily quoted Zhou Pengjun, an official with the General Logistics Department, as saying in a front-page story.

China has experienced pressing energy shortages in recent years, and Beijing has intensified its efforts to secure China's energy supply through both increased domestic production and external expansion. In this paper, I first analyze China's global quest for energy by looking at the correlation between China's economic growth and its energy security concerns. I then examine the implications of China's "go-out" strategy through two sets of case studies. I argue that China's global search for energy is primarily driven by its rapid economic growth, out of insecurity rather than a master plan to dominate the world, and that China's energy security issues have multiple implications beyond simple economic concerns. Finally, I recommend a forward-looking engagement policy to be adapted by Ca...

Hong Kong's media and business elites have also been criticized for kowtowing to Beijing. The South China Morning Post newspaper -- Hong Kong's leading English language daily -- was once seen as the colonial establishment's mouthpiece. Now the deputy editor is a former Communist Party cadre from mainland China and the newspaper is perceived as a mouthpiece for Beijing.
Hong Kong's liberal-minded professional middle class is especially suspicious of Beijing's efforts to rewrite history to its own liking. An otherwise respected pro-Beijing politician sparked condemnation last month when he said the crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in and around Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, was not a massacre. In Hong Kong terms, such a statement is as toxic as a Holocaust denial in the West.

The current era is both exciting and confusing. A lot of changes are going on in China. There are both crises and opportunities. In this essay, I want to introduce many exciting recent developments of contemporary Christianity in China. All the developments show that the Chinese church is already taking deeper and deeper roots in China, and there are a lot of opportunities for the church to participate in culture and society. Many Chinese, both common people and intellectuals, have a renewed appreciation of the strength and relevance of the Christian faith, and many others are crying out for something that can satisfy their spiritual longing. Yes, indeed many people are searching for God, or perhaps it is God Himself who has been actively searching for the Chinese since very early times.

At present, there are altogether more than 100 people who can play curling in China, some of whom are not professional players or at the lower level," curling official Li Dongyan told the Daily. "Since few people know the sport in China, it's hard to get more people involved.
Perhaps. But that's not what many others will see. They'll see a sport that is apparently so easy to master that you can give a few dozen people a few sheets of ice and a few rocks and within a decade four out of 100 -- that's men and women, don't forget -- can actually beat the best in the world.
Maybe that's just patriotic envy talking. After all, curling is something we've always excelled at, something we claim as our own. Kinda like back in '72, when those Soviets taught us smug Canucks a lesson about playing...
