  • The direct-to-DVD sequel offers nothing in the way of meaningful subtext. Christian Slater stars (in a manner of speaking) as Griffin, a government assassin whose invisibility has rendered him both insane and terminally ill. He tracks down the scientist Maggie (Laura Regan as your typical lithe, blond, beautiful researcher) capable of cooking up a "buffer" to cure his disease. So the highly connected kingpin in charge of the project (any resemblance to Donald Rumsfeld is unintentional, I'm sure) uses Maggie as bait to trap Griffin, and only a bewildered Seattle cop (Peter Facinelli) can save her, etc. Let's just say there's a reason it's direct-to-video. [Paul Verhoeven] gets credit as an executive producer as well as a murder victim, but his penchant for wild excess is keenly missed he...

  • Sean Penn, who snagged a best-actor win for 2003's Mystic River, called this year's winner, Daniel Day-Lewis, "the greatest actor ever recorded on film." Lewis won for his performance in There Will Be Blood. [Elton John] and David Furnish shared [Ellen DeGeneres]' table during dinner, along with [Mary J. Blige] and her husband. Nemcova, who arrived with Penn, sat with him and Kate Beckinsale, Chris O'Donnell and Larry King. Guests, who also included Billy Joel, Christian Slater and Russell Simmons, ate pear salad, risotto, beef tenderloin, cheese with walnuts and chocolate mousse. Most are out to show their bosoms," he said, his throat hoarse because of laryngitis. "I've seen a few beautiful dresses, but there's nothing really original here.

  • Remember those commercials for the modelling school that promised you could "be a model, or just look like one"? This new series doesn't just promise that; it delivers. Each episode takes a woman who doesn't fit the model mould and transforms her into something worthy of a magazine cover, no surgery required. You'll be amazed, and if you're a woman over 30, you'll be wanting to sign up. Model Frederique van der Wal hosts. TLC, 9 p.m. Daaaad! Tom Cruise won't come out of the closet!" In case you missed it -- or didn't but want to see it again -- here's the episode viewers in Britain originally didn't get to see, thanks to the pressure Cruise put on television executives. It's a spot-on lampoon of the Church of Scientology, in which young Stan, declared to be the second coming of L. Ron ...

  • ABC renewed five of its rookie offerings from the strike-disrupted 2007-08 season -- Samantha Who?, Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money. Its two new series are Life on Mars, a David E. Kelley-produced American version of the offbeat BBC cop drama about a detective who suddenly finds himself transported back to 1973, and Opportunity Knocks, a reality/game show in which the program's production unit shows up unannounced on the doorsteps of families across the U.S. and offers them a chance to win big money by answering trivia questions about themselves. Also returning to ABC this fall are Boston Legal, Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Dancing With the Stars, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, America's Funniest Home Videos...

  • Because of last winter's labour dispute, fewer new-show pilots were produced than is customary. Many of this fall's new offerings were given the green light by network programmers who hadn't seen anything more than a script, or perhaps a few minutes of rough video patched together to give a rough impression of what the show in question might someday become. There's more uncertainty in this fall's lineup than in any other season launch in recent memory. Since we're starting this new-season roundup on Saturday, we're faced with the perennial problem of highlighting an evening of programming that contains absolutely nothing new. The night's schedule has always been all about hockey on the nation's public broadcaster, and since the U.S. networks have long since abandoned Saturday as a night...

  • For the second year in a row, the Canwest launch included an unintended backhanded slap at the city in which the empire was born. Last year, the company went hype-crazy over the launch of its E! entertainment network, which is not available in Winnipeg because our city didn't have one of the CH channels that were rebranded to become E! stations; this year, in an attempt to accent Global's ad-appeal strengths, [Kathleen Dore] told the crowd of 1,500 at the Elgin Theatre that Canwest's strategy for 2008-09 is to focus on the 18-to-49 demographic "in Canada's three largest markets" -- meaning Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. Also in Global's rookie crop are Kath & Kim, a U.S. version of a hit Aussie sitcom, featuring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair as a dysfunctional mother-daughter duo, ...

  • After more than a decade of rumours, tension, aborted studio sessions, multiple producers, fired band members and over $13 million already spent on production, the long-awaited followup to Guns N' Roses' simultaneously released Use Your Illusion I and II (1991) is finally going to make it to stores. Although singer Axl Rose and his new hired guns have been playing some of the songs from Chinese Democracy on the last couple of tours and nine tracks were leaked to the web by Antiquiet.com this summer, anticipation for Rose's magnum opus is still high. (In an odd move, Best Buy will be the only retailer selling the album when it's released Nov. 23.)

  • Given the hugely successful launch of the low-budget horror movie Paranormal Activity, it's time to pay homage to a past master of cinematic ballyhoo. William Castle packaged most of his movies with a flamboyant gimmick, including placing buzzers under theatre seats to shock unsuspecting patrons. Castle gets his due in The William Castle Film Collection, an eight-movie omnibus including genre landmarks such as 13 Ghosts (the original), Homicidal (a distaff variation of Psycho), and Strait-Jacket, a film that saw Joan Crawford, right, wielding an axe, as opposed to a wire hanger.

  • It's widely expected that Scrubs will end up on ABC next season, given that it's produced by the network's Disney brother ABC Studios and network entertainment chief Stephen McPherson helped develop the show back when he ran the studio. Recent reports have said a deal with ABC is near completion; ABC will announce its schedule in mid-May, during the traditional upfront week. NBC boss Ben Silverman managed to get in a diss of ABC in noting that following its season finale in May, Scrubs will be a free agent. "If they can go 1-for-21, good for them," Silverman said, referring to ABC's less-than-stellar recent record at developing comedy hits.
