The Harper government claims that it is keen to develop a strong policy towards Latin America. Yet it is a flawed approach, supporting US policy at a time when it is at its lowest point in decades, while ignoring both a clear leftward swing of elected Latin American governments in the last five years and the significant importance of Cuba in the region. This paper examines the Harper government's approach to Cuba. Following some general comments on the evolution of Canadian policy towards revolutionary Cuba, it examines some of the errors in the Harper approach, suggests an explanation for the approach employed, and makes suggestions about policies that Ottawa should consider to improve relations. In sports terms, Cuba "punches above its weight"-a fact which is known widely in Latin Ame...

The bulk of this exquisite work is built around [Lu Decheng], his life, his loves and his emerging philosophy. [Denise Chong] has twice been nominated for Governor General's awards for non-fiction, both for books on Asian topics. Similar success with Egg on Mao would come as no surprise.
His wife, Wang Qiupen, was the great abiding love of his life. Together they defied the Residents' Committee, which had the power to say "yes" or "no" to plans they had for marriage, family formation and abortion.
As the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games approached, human rights advocates pressed harder and harder for the Chinese government to release many of its political prisoners. Lu Decheng was sponsored by a Calgary-based human rights group and he now makes his home in that city.

Mysteries surrounding Bobby Fischer are continuing even after his death. There are reports he was quietly buried in a small church cemetery about 60 kilometres south of Reykjavik, but there is speculation about who might be entitled to his estate.
Fischer lived for years with Miyoko Watai, former president of the Japan Federation, but no one knows for sure whether they were legally married. Fischer lived in almost complete secrecy during his final years in Iceland, but the legal fight that will undoubtedly erupt over his estate may shed further light on his relationships.

Oh the other hand, because [Anne McClintock] understands nationalisms as necessarily gendered, and because of her keen attention to the use of domestic trope in representing national homelands, she cannot simply dismiss the identifications of nations with the family and domestic spaces as a matter of "political love." She shows that the trope of the family works on two levels: "First, it offers a 'natural' figure for sanctioning national hierarchy within a putative organic unity of interests. Second, it offers a 'natural' trope for figuring national time" (1997, p. 91). Consequently, the family and domestic space "offered an indispensable metaphoric figure by which national difference could be shaped into a single historical genesis narrative" (p. 91). Just as hierarchies of age and gen...

The World Tourism Conference which was held at Manila,Philippines in October 1980, considered the nature of tourism in all its aspects and the role tourism is bound to play in a dynamic and vastly changing world. The Manila Declaration on World Tourism argues that there are many constraint on the development of tourism, and groups of Nations should determine and study these constraints, and adopt measures aimed at removing their negative influence. It has been observed that violent crimes, civil unrest, kidnapping for ransom and terrorism to mention some, are enemies of tourism in Nigeria. Regrettably, the security warnings declared by Nation States and International Organizations against the danger posed by these constraints on tourism have been misconstrued as negative propaganda in N...
