With the world facing, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, "abrupt and irreversible" damage unless emissions are curbed immediately, the Commonwealth initiative should have had at least the support of the developed countries among its members. Environmental damage costs the Chinese economy 10 per cent of the country's gross domestic product; China, thanks to carbon-emissions trading, is receiving billions of dollars to adopt clean development mechanisms; the Chinese people want an end to having to breathe in air that in Beijing is said to be the equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day.

My generation has messed things up," [Colin Crolly] said Saturday while listening to speakers at a climate-change rally on the Manitoba legislative building grounds.
"You can't help but think how history will look at us," he said.
"I'm worried about the world we are leaving for the children... Time is running out for us to reduce the risk of dangerous climate change.

The high temperature reading for your ambient temperature display is likely caused by the temperature sensing wire shorted to ground. The temperature sensor is a resistor that varies with temperature. One wire to it is the signal wire to the climate control head and the other wire is a ground connection. With the sensor disconnected, there should be a five-volt reading on the light green with black stripe wire. This is the signal wire. If the voltage is low, disconnect the electrical connector on the back of the climate control head and test the signal wire for continuity to ground. If there is continuity to ground, then the wire has rubbed through to a metal part on the car. There should be no continuity. Trace the wire harness back, looking for places where it may have rubbed through....

Where the timing might be less happy -- for all of GM's heavyweights -- is in gaining height and corresponding bulk while gas prices also rise. The sleeker body cuts resistance, and GM's Active Fuel Management drops the 5.3-litre V-8 to a four-cylinder for highway cruising, but we still couldn't come close to the posted fuel consumption ratings of 15.4 L/100 km city, 10.4 highway.
The ride is closer to luxury sedan than traditional pickup. With coil-over-shocks replacing the front torsion bars, and with the LTZ's rear air suspension, the Avalanche glided along with little jostle or sway to remind us it's also built to work.

Customers are telling us that they want a fuel-efficient vehicle, but they don't want to sacrifice premium equipment or driving excitement," said Stephen McDonnell, Director, MINI Canada in a recent press release. "MINI is the perfect solution.
Words like "incredible," "rad," "hip," "stylin'" and "awesome" have all been used to describe the increasing number of stretch trucks found in major cities throughout North America.

With a push of the starter button the 3.5-litre DOHC 24-valve V6 engine that lives beneath that sexy hood emits a satisfying growl from the cavernous dual-exhaust pipes. This jewel of an engine features an aluminium block and heads and an electronically controlled throttle system that has been tuned specifically for use in the FX35. The engine is rated at 303 horsepower (versus the previous generation's 275 horses), yet boasts improved fuel efficiency.
The new FX also includes an array of available advanced safety systems. The Intelligent Brake Assist system uses the laser rangefinder from the Intelligent Cruise Control's system and analyzes closing speeds to an obstacle ahead to help prevent or reduce damage caused by a rear-end collision. When activated, the available Infiniti Lane De...

There are two powertrain packages from which to select -- a naturally aspirated, 4.4-litre aluminum V8 kicking out 300 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque or a supercharged 4.2L V8 that boosts the power to 390 horses and 410 lb-ft of torque. Both engines work through a six-speed ZF automatic and a two-speed electronic transfer case with an infinitely variable locking centre differential that automatically moves available torque to both axles.
The Sport's four-wheel drive is a full-time system that can be shifted between low and high ranges without stopping. There's also a fully locked mode should you decide to take it off-road, although it's difficult to imagine anyone pounding one of these $80,000-plus vehicles through the rough stuff. Still, there's no doubt the Sport has the capa...

Subaru's Forester, which has been on sale for more than 10 years now, is a bit of a 'tweener in the realm of automotive classification. As if the definition of a crossover isn't tough enough to nail down, Subaru further blurred the line with the Forester and its tall wagon shape. Its driving position has always been lower than most others in its class, and certainly in the department of driving dynamics, Subaru has held a distinct advantage as one of the sportiest CUVs on the market.
The corporate three-spoke steering wheel has buttons for cruise on the right and audio on the left. There's only one transmission available to Ralliart buyers, and that's a five-speed automatic with manual shift mode. The abundance of torque flowing from the big six makes the tranny's job easier, to be sure, but the slushbox nonetheless knows what gear to be in and does a fine job responding. The manual shift mode falls strictly into the novelty category, quickly revealing that the transmission would rather be left in D to do its business. Manual downshifts in particular are abrupt and not entirely welcome.
Don't get me wrong, though: the Galant does not fit into the category of stoplight racer. It also knows how to carve a corner or two. Suspended on MacPherson struts in front and an independent low-mounted multilink setup in back, the Ralliart also gets a rear stabilizer bar (in add...

The culprit isn't the concrete -- it's the moisture that wicks through the concrete from the ground below. Place a piece of plastic on a bare concrete floor and after a few days you will find a damp spot beneath the plastic. The same happens when you place a plastic battery case on the floor. This moisture creates a higher humidity level around the battery case that allows electrons to "leak" from the negative to positive posts, discharging the battery.
One way to prevent this is to operate the climate control fan on high for a few minutes before shutting the vehicle off. This will help dry the heater housing out. While this works, it is also inconvenient, so some of the newer vehicles now incorporate an "afterblow" into the automatic climate control programming. This afterblow program...
