Other tree species are not so well managed. Varieties of ash trees such as green ash, black ash and Manchurian ash have been increasingly used throughout the city as well as in southern Manitoba largely as an easy way to establish replacements for American elm. Some of these ash trees are hybrid species that appear to be very promising as future additions in the urban forest. However within the last few years, a very destructive insect called the emerald ash borer has been destroying millions of ash trees in Michigan, northern Ohio, northern Indiana and southwestern Ontario. It kills swiftly and without biological impunity. To date there are no treatments to eradicate this pest except to remove the infested tree. It is heading north though Michigan and tolerates low winter temperatures....
